Food always reliably good, scene always reliably relaxed, this is my favorite place to go for a laid back dinner out. I think people who knock the place really don't get what its all about. Freeman's isn't a place to go when you're trying to squeeze dinner into your only free hour in the day and it isn't a place to go if you need your server to give you more positive reinforcement than a kindergarten teacher. It's just a cool place with service thats always knowledgeable and respectful, set apart by food thats way above average and has a broad appeal. My favorites are the cheddar toasts and the pork, but you could go back again and again, try different things and never have a bad meal.

I have been to this place about 6 times.. Usually I found everything to be above aveage. We went last Tues. @6:00 since they don't take reservations for 4. The waiter was just okay. Seemed a little put out. I was entertaining European guests. I was born here. After paying an over $400. check (including $72 tip) one of my guests wanted to try a dessert. He wanted us to leave so he could get the table . He also put a service charge on the bill and I gave him anothr 20%. They are greedy.
Maybe it's on again, off again...

...but each time I've been there, I've had a pretty good time. The food is excellent, as is the atmosphere. Yes, you generally have to wait over an hour for a table, but frankly, there are two bars on the premises to help you through that. If you're too uptight to cut loose and go with the flow - and you REALLY need to keep bugging the host for "updates" - there's a customer-centric, quality-driven Red Lobster up on Times Square that will accomodate. Also, each time I've been here, the service has been wonderful. This week, we had the best waiter we've had at any restaurant, all year.
Great Food Poor Service

I went to Freeman's for brunch at 2pm. The waitresses would not give us the wait time on the phone or even when on site until the whole party was there. They then ignored our presence for over half an hour. As for the decor, I am not a big fan of taxidermy but the place did have character. It has long wood tables giving you privacy which is nice. The food was amazing and this is one of the best brunches I have had in a long time. but the service issue kind of ruined the rest of the brunch. Nice place but service definitely needs improvement.

I first walked by Freemans two years ago and didn't have a chance to go until Saturday night when we had a delicious and very reasonable dinner. The ambiance is like being in your eccentric English uncle's home and the alley leading to Freemans is like wandering down a Roman or Parisian alley to find a delicious surprise at the end. Sunday, we brought our extended family of 6 adults, a toddler and an infant. Although getting a reservation was a little problematic because we didn't call at least 24 hours in advance, we did stop by early to say we'd be there at 12:30 and when we arrived a big table was waiting and they were very welcoming of our kids. Wait staff is friendly but at busy times you might get a touch of attitude at the door. Ignore it and persevere; it's well worth it!

Once you've gone down the alley, it seems like you've left present day New York and you're been transported to another time and place. It's location is really cool and so is the decor. The food, service and drinks are all good and made that much better with the price. The place is cheap. It's refreshing to have a new place that's not overpriced with bad service and passable food. I'll definitely go back and will work on becoming a regular. The place is a real gem.
