Some disclosure first. I have no vested interest in either Italian restaurant - I just happen to live in the area. The food at Gaetana's is sub par. Really. Actually sub par. Perhaps I went on a busy night, perhaps the kitchen was not performing as it should, but the food was down right terrible. So terrible that for the first time in my life, I sent the food back and did not feel good about paying the check. In fact, this restaurant was so bad, I signed up to menupages just to write a negative review. Really. I ordered two dishes - the rigatoni with pesto as a starter and the chicken milanese as a main. Let's start with the pasta, none of which is homemade. I was served overcooked bland pasta - forget ala dente, this was ala mushy. Their pesto sauce is cream based. Seriously. It's actually a green cream sauce without any hint of basil. If there is any basil, it was likely from a can. For my main I ordered chicken milanese. That is breaded, pan fried, chicken. How can it be bad? It managed to be both rubbery and burnt. On the plus side, however, the manger is delightful and was very gracious about the poor quality of the food. He assured us it was a fluke - but I am not sure that was the case. In summary - bad food. Skip it. Really. There are many good Italian restaurants in the area, this is not one of them.

The NYMag review is spot on -- for those in the neighborhood, this should be your Italian restaurant. I took friends from out-of-town for a casual meal, and we had a great experience. Our food was delicious; the service was excellent; and the owner was warm, welcoming and personally attentive to us. We were stuffed at the end of our meal, but the owner sent us a complimentary dessert with our after-dinner drinks -- like the rest our our meal, it disappeared. The mussels in red sauce is an outstanding appetizer. Great place for a casual meal.

Gaetana's has wonderful food and their bread (served as soon as you order your entree) was amazing! It's laced with cheese and baked to perfection. The ambiance is up-scale but comfortable and not overly chic. My chicken entree was incredible and I plan to go back for a pasta dish soon. The wait staff was friendly and quick. They take reservations, another plus. And they also have a nice bar I plan to visit!

...thank you gaetana's, from my family and i, for a great, great night. we felt so welcomed the minute we walked in, and didn't want to leave. i wish i could remember our server's name so i could thank her again for the round of shots she bought for my father, brother, and i, after she found out we had recently celebrated bithdays. the food was no less amazing than the service. the mussels are addicting. once again thank you, and if anyone else is reading this and has never been to gaetana's this is what to expect....a friendly staff who is thankful to have your buisness and shows it, a lively atmosphere, and good food.

Went to Gaetana's on a Friday night at 8, and there was no wait and a few empty tables. But the food was incredible--caprese appetizer, perfectly crispy pizza with prosciutto, tiramisu, and great red wines. The prices are reasonable, the staff is nice (if not prompt, persay). Definitely will be heading back.
