I am a NYU student and this used to be one of my favorite Thai restaurants in village but sadly after todays experience I am not sure if I’ll ever go back there. I took my visiting parents to this restaurants their service was awful and food was average. Their waitress was not courteous or welcoming. Dining experience is not the same as it used to be.

I live nearby and often eat at Galanga and usually love the food. I have not tried every dish but the Drunken Noodle, Curries, The Chang Mai Noodle soup are all top shelf. The service is what it is. A few cultural and language hurdles but they seem to try and care. The wait staff can be distracted but they are cute and friendly. I've met the owners outside the restaurant with their funny dog, they are serious, really nice and seem to be really focused on making the food authentic. They quizzed me on my experience there. They seemed to be real-restauaranters, not just Thai kids opening a pad thai joint. Sure kitchens do have bad days and Thai food is a very subjective palate. I'm sure Galanga like all Thai places tries to walk the fine line of keeping Americans (NYU Kids) happy with big bowls of noodles and also keeping their great Thai food traditions. It's a highwire act not many in NY do very well but I'm a fan of Galanga and would recommend it to Americans/ Thais and anyone else. I would not get swayed by some hyper-critical reviews. There is very yummy food here.

NY MAG said precisely the opposite of what I criticized this place for. Upon leaving I saw this review and questioned the knowledge of validity of this review (reviewer) and wondered where the hell has the taste, style, sophistication and quality of NYC really gone? This place is horrible. The so-called "balance" of the food (upon which Thai food is created) is NOT present. It is all sour. Nothing more. The Duck Larb had 5 tiny strips of duck in it at a whopping $16.50 price tag. Full of sliced onions and cilantro and unbalanced acidic taste. It was awful. The "sticky rice" alongside it was nothing more than over cooked watered down saturated flavorless rice. I had to turn it back. The staff was unfriendly and rude. They grabbed plates before you were even finished. The salmon was flavorless except for the overly peppered topping. The interior had no flavor whatsoever. The Green Papaya salad was all lime and chili without any nuance or flavor that this dish typically offers. This restaurant is absolutely an insult to the Thai kitchen. HORRIBLE!

GALANGA: Want to meet staff with attitude?

The reviews of this restaurant are usually good. The food is certainly fresh and tasty. Except the Tom Yum noodle soup. I didn't like it here (although I've enjoyed this dish elsewhere). My wife, who is Filipina didn't like it either. It had a bitter taste, like green tamarind or too much fish sauce. So I immediately ordered something else. Then we had a battle over whether we should pay for the uneaten Tom Yum. I wouldn't have minded paying for it (after all, I chose it), but the waitress then spent the evening ignoring us (I had to order additional drinks from another waitress), claimed to intercede with the manager (who never showed their face) and finally conceded that we hadn't actually eaten the Tom Yum, took it off the bill, but then more or less demanded a 15% tip! Beware. You had better like the food. Or else!

Maybe it was an off day at Galanga, but the overall experience was terrible

I went here after reading a few reviews. The Thai food I had at lunch today was by far the worst I have ever had anywhere in this city. When we arrived for lunch around 12:15 the restaurant was still relatively empty, yet everyone's main dishes came out of the kitchen staggered over 10 minutes. The waitresses appeared rushed and didn't check back with us during our meal. My Beef Pad See Ew was overcooked and inedible and my salad had an unappetizing sesame dressing. I was embarrassed that I brought my friends here. I will not be returning.

I went with two other people for lunch, and all of us were very pleased. I had the country-style curry, which was great. It was as spicy as the menu suggested, which usually seems untrue at other restaurants. The service was good, and we received our food fairly quickly. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and have already suggested it to a friend who lives in the area.

went there for dinner on a friday night- the place wasnt packed which should have been a sign! the food is ok- not the best thai ive had in manhatttan but not the worst either. the service however is very pushy- the waitress wouldnt leave us alone for 2 mins to even order the main course, the place is cash-only (which makes me even more suspicious), they took 15 mins to get me a bottled beer and to cap it off when i tipped her 12% the waitress had the audacity to suggest that we NEED to tip 15% even for a party of 2! thrs much better value-for-money thai bistros in the city...dont waste your time here.

The value is great and food is excellent. I heard that there will be another Galanga opening soon on 9th Ave and 18th street. Duck salad and shrimp with green curry sauce are my favorite.

Thai food with a dull sigh. Awkward waitresses with passive aggressive attitudes. I can't think of a better word to describe my extraordinarily watered down experience, but boring! How is Thai food boring? Tom Yum was a kindergarten play date, and I never received my coconut soup. The duck spring rolls, more like vegetarian tofu spring rolls; although presented quite nicely atop a bed of shredded beets and an orchid. Curry. Oh my god. That was the kicker! Watered down, undesirable, bowl of fool's gold. Overall, walk past and fast.

The spicy treats available here are really good. It's a great night in option too with speedy delivery. My only complaint is when I call they can't understand the order and I can't hear them due to the seriously loud kitchen noise. It's very off putting and I wonder what will be delivered. When it is delivered it is very very good.
