Food is good, if you've got hours to spare

I liked the food, my steak was perfectly cooked, their garden is lovely. My problem is that we had a reservation for 8pm, the owner acted like she was making us a favor when she sat us down shortly after 9pm and then our starters arrived around 40 mins later. So yes, the food at Gavroche is good, but for all the waiting, I'd expect it to be much better. The tables are practically on top of each other, so there's no privacy. Perhaps I would go back on a less busy night, but it is not my top priority!

Wonderful, informal French cuisine

Every dish on the menu at Gavroche is excellent. The French staples - steak-frites, coq au vin, etc. - are great, and they have created some superb fish dishes, and a terrific mushroom ravioli with truffle oil. A lot of work has gone into devising great sauces and sides. The lemon and caper sauce that comes with the tilapia is subtle and balanced just right. For appetizers, if you're really hungry, try the charcuterie plate -- a big wooden board filled with cured meats, salami and a duck confit, served with warm crusty bread. The hostess is wonderfully gracious, and the service is warm and welcoming, which makes for a relaxed, casual dinner. There's a nice wine list. The full-service bar does great cocktails - try the lychee martini. The garden dining space is lovely on a warm summer evening.

Off of the beaten up and congested path that is 14th St, you can find a mostly empty, dark front room of a fairly typical looking French place. In fact, it doesn't look all that different from an Italian place right up the street. The difference comes when you are led through a narrow, painted brick hallway, leading to a hidden back garden. The simply decorated outdoor space is a breath of fresh air in a much needed locale. I am reluctant to even write this as I feel like I'm giving up a secret. The classic french fare includes mussels that you sop up wiht the hot and crusty bread. The roasted beet slad is clean and delicious- with plenty of actual beets. Steak frites, coq au vin, roasted cod all were a pleasure, as was the creme brulee and apple tart special. You will want to take freinds there but you won;t want them to ruin your perfect secret garden.
