Nice dinner at Gazala's

I'd go back to Gazala's (on 9th Avenue) in a hearbeat. Why? First, the Boureka was outstanding. Just thinking about it makes me hungry. Flaky, savory, just the right ratio of spinach and cheese, and very pretty to look at. Second, the hummus and babaganoush were both spicy, a bit smoky, and as fresh as they can be. The pitas were unique - much thinner than pitas served at most other middle eastern places. The waitreses gladly refilled out pitas when we asked. Finally, the baclava was sweet, but not cloying. Simple, fresh, tasty, unpretentious, reasonably priced, this place is excellent.

Gazala's Place is hands down the best Middle Eastern food I've had in NYC in six years of living here. The food is simply amazing, the space is very cool, and the service is always great. I've been there twice in 2 weeks and just ordered take out tonight. The portions are nice and the flavor of the chicken kebab will make you a believer. Hummus, baba ganoush, tabouli are all super authentic. They don't have traditional pita bread though because of the Druze twist but their thinner homemade bread is great. Gazala's is only for those that appreciate real Middle Eastern. Oh, and it's BYOB...could it get any better???

We went to newly opened Gazala Friday night with two friends. Since we live just down the block, when we were informed that they don't have a liquor license, that was no problem; I just joged about 100 meters to our house, grabbed a couple of bottles of good Chilean wine and was bad in a flash. A little more problematic was the fact that their credit card machine wasn't working - but no real problem since all together we had enough cash. The food was delicious. We had Babaganush, hommus, foule and a lamb shank plus a salad. All was great. Service was fine - the place wasn't crowded as it was Friday of Labor Day Weekend. Our only complaint is that the tables are seriously too small; since the food tends to be type that people share, several plates just don't fit on the table.
