Worst Service Ever
By brooklyn92104 on 10/6/2008
I went to Gemma the other night for cocktails with a few friends. The inside was adorable and the menu looked interesting. However, I will never go back because it was some of the worst service I have ever had. We sat at the relatively empty bar and after waiting 10 minutes for someone to come over, we had the menus thrown at us, shortly followed by three coasters zipped through the air. The hostility was so apparent that it drew questioning gazes from the other people at the bar. It even prompted a man sitting next to us to ask what we did to the waitress. It was a horrible experience all around.
Appetizers and atmosphere

I had been reading about Gemma for a while and 5 amazing cheeses for $20 dollars did the trick for us. We dined outside for a late lunch/ early dinner. Splitting a bottle of wine, cheese plate, pizza and a salad was more than enough food and drinks for two. The restaurant is beautiful and the staff was very accommodating and friendly. Cheeses were amazing and we are pretty critical. I expected the bill to be more than it was, the prices are in line with the quality.
WHO ENJOYS WATERED DOWN DRINKS?
By ALANINNY22 on 7/29/2008
WE WERE A TABLE OF 10 WHO IS INTO DRINKING. THE DRINKS WERE SERVED AFTER A 20 MINUTE WAIT. NOT ONLY THEY WERE IN VERY SMALL GLASSES, BUT EXTREMELY WATERED DOWN. THE SERVICE WAS ALSO EXTREMELY SLOW AND WE WERE FORCED TO PAY THE 18% RECOMMANDED TIP AT THE END. NEITHER I OR ANY OF MY FRIENDS WOULD EVER STEP INTO THIS PLACE.

I have been here twice and both times were great experiences. I prefer to sit at the bar, where attentive bartenders bring you water with your drinks and even gave a man a napkin after a sneeze! The food is not over the top, but the staff was wonderful in helping us select the above average dishes. Overall, a great scene where the people watching and service but expect to deal with crowds and a wait.
Boring food, but overall great experience...

If you're a person who likes to experience new flavors and admire a chef's creativity, you might find Gemma's food a bit boring. You won't find anything on the menu that you haven't seen somewhere before, but that said after a couple of visits nothing has tasted sub-par. Most, in fact, has been quite good. Add to that an amazing decor, a good scene and really unpretentious service, and Gemma becomes a real crowd pleaser. Those who appreciate good food won't be let down, and those who go out more for a scene/experience won't be put off by a 'for foodies only' menu. Don't expect a dining experience thats on some kind of new level, but look forward to good food and service in a place that, I think looks better than most other restaurants in town.
Inept Hostess Desk - where is management???
By kstiles99 on 9/29/2007
We went to Gemma last nite. Hostess told us 45 mins for a table for 2. That is fine, however they don't take reservations! We told hostess we were going elsewhere for a drink as their bar was packed, said we'd be back for our 45 min slot. We went back 40 mins later and she said "ok, you are making progress, its about 30 more mins"!!!! Unacceptable. We went across the street to Sala (Spanish food) and had a delightful meal.
