Inept Hostess Desk - where is management???

We went to Gemma last nite. Hostess told us 45 mins for a table for 2. That is fine, however they don't take reservations! We told hostess we were going elsewhere for a drink as their bar was packed, said we'd be back for our 45 min slot. We went back 40 mins later and she said "ok, you are making progress, its about 30 more mins"!!!! Unacceptable. We went across the street to Sala (Spanish food) and had a delightful meal.
Worst Service Ever

I went to Gemma the other night for cocktails with a few friends. The inside was adorable and the menu looked interesting. However, I will never go back because it was some of the worst service I have ever had. We sat at the relatively empty bar and after waiting 10 minutes for someone to come over, we had the menus thrown at us, shortly followed by three coasters zipped through the air. The hostility was so apparent that it drew questioning gazes from the other people at the bar. It even prompted a man sitting next to us to ask what we did to the waitress. It was a horrible experience all around.

What can i say about this place that hasn't been said. The service is god-awful, beyond belief atrocious, miserably terrible, unfortunately non-existent, ridiculously inattentive... A group of us (5) went here for a belated birthday dinner. It would have been nice if the waiter knew anything about the wines being served considering theres a book of them with no less than 5 pages. You cant serve a $500 bottle and not know shit about any of them. Luckily the friend who was nice enough to take us out knows wine and picked a delightful bottle of chianti. The food was mediocre, for the price it was terrible. The crostini was soggy (wtf is a soggy crostini?!), the salads were nice but uninspired. I need to say more about the service because it was unbelievably bad. The balding man with an accent would pass by our table seemingly trying to ignore us. It appeared that during our dinner he decided to have his own. Unfortunately his timing at service was just plain awful. He couldn't course the meal for shit (half the kitchen's fault i may add). I understand that 5 people takes more work but you are gifted in return by a great tip, which he did not receive. In fact he had the nerve to come follow us out and comment on it in front of his manager. Oh and it wasn't just us, the table next to us was literally waving their hands in an exhaustive attempt to get their check so they could end their misery. AVOID!
Mediocre food, HORRIBLE service

While I am pretty patient with waiters, Gemma really tested my patience. Our waiter spent 15 minutes chatting with some ladies across the way, completely ignoring our table, forgetting to bring drinks and even bringing the complete wrong dish for one of us. When we were lucky enough to have his attention, he was extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. The brunch was mediocre, the presentation lacking, and many of the dishes came with no sides - no toast, no potatoes, and, of course, no warning from our unhelpful waiter.
Santa was poisoned here.

A Christmas eve dinner that went wrong. I really wanted this place to be better. Pretty cool location and it looks great. I had an above average breakfast here once and was hoping for a great dinner. I found our waiter way too moody for a recession and the food was very average and very pricey. We had the $30 lobster risotto that made us both ill the following day, the spinach pasta was extremely average and they forgot to bring one of our sides. The interior heating was constantly being turned on and off. Way too much attitude for a place that turned out to be extremely average. If you want rustic Italian try Supper or Frankies on Clinton St.
Go somewhere else

Below average Italian food in a city filled with great Italian restaurants. Poor service to boot.

went here last night w/ a group of 7 because the wait @ hecho en dumbo was an hour and a half. menu looked good, atmosphere is nice, food was below average. "fresh" pasta tasted stale & the "oxtail" ragu was more just a bland tomato sauce. burrata tasted like it was beginning to sour and was very firm, DEFINITELY not made or brought in fresh. Pizza's were decent. good & correctly priced wine list. Service was good, despite a lot of these other reviews. The worst part about the whole experience though was the fact that we ALL got sick the next day. everyone at the table had fluish symptoms first thing in the AM. not a chance i'll ever go back, Sala right across the street has never disappointed.
Poor Service: and even Poorer Management

This evening I went to Gemma. The waiter who started my service was fine at the beginning. The problem was that he disappeared never to return until he gave me the bill. A new waiter came on and had a major attitude. I discussed this with a neighbor at the next table. He was sarcastic, rude, offensive and I requested that my old waiter continue the service; but that did not happen. There was no hand off; no smooth transition, just a major dumping. I paid $50.00 for this experience and was treated poorly. I called the establishment after I left. I asked to speak to the manager on duty. He saw nothing wrong with the above and stated that this kind of service and abrupt change in server was at his instructions. He said that he saw me laughing so I could not have been upset. The truth of the matter was that I was very upset. When my original waiter showed his face an hour later; I asked him what happened to him. The pasta was OK; nothing outstanding, the chianti was pleasant. There are many other restaurants in NYC where the staff and management are not as obtuse as Gemma's. Too bad; they really think they are special and customer service is secondary and believe me there is nothing special about the service or staff. Like the other reviews stated; better to go somewhere else or across the street. You would have gotten better service at a diner and probably would have gotten a smile. Very unfriendly staff and lackluster and non-existent service.
WHO ENJOYS WATERED DOWN DRINKS?

WE WERE A TABLE OF 10 WHO IS INTO DRINKING. THE DRINKS WERE SERVED AFTER A 20 MINUTE WAIT. NOT ONLY THEY WERE IN VERY SMALL GLASSES, BUT EXTREMELY WATERED DOWN. THE SERVICE WAS ALSO EXTREMELY SLOW AND WE WERE FORCED TO PAY THE 18% RECOMMANDED TIP AT THE END. NEITHER I OR ANY OF MY FRIENDS WOULD EVER STEP INTO THIS PLACE.
