This is my fourth attempt at Ethiopian, after having it in D.C., NYC and Montreal. I have typically found it overpoweringly vinegary or spicy to the point of obliterating any other flavor and I love my food hot. Ghenet was a superb lesson in try, try and try again! There wasn't a single item ordered that wasn't worth fighting fellow dinners for the last bite over. Ghenet is now very much at the top of the list of treasured restaurants and we are very lucky to have it in Brooklyn, where so many of the crowded restaurants offer subpar food at over the top prices.

Cozy, Pleasant but not Great

I went to Ghenet on a Sunday afternoon, the restaurant was quite empty. The male waitress was polite. We ordered the Kitfo Tiklil as an appetizer. It's like a crispy ground beef wrap and it was delicious and very filling. Our order came out very fast but I was not impressed with the food. The eating with the hands experience was quite fun. Our order of Kitfo and Doro came in a large plate with a sour Ethiopian flat bread/pita that you use to pick up the food. The food is not heavy at all. Easy to digest. The sharing experience was most interesting and memorable part. It's quite a dating spot.

Interesting but not great

I was excited to try Ethiopian food, this was my first time, and went with someone that has had it numerous times, even in Ethiopia. The food portion size was decent however the "Doro Wett" only had one chicken thigh in it, and this was a chicken dish?! My friends also ordered other chicken dishes and each one just had a very tiny piece of chicken. The Doro Wett was very spicy, and my expert friend said it was too much. The decor is lovely but the service was lacking. The waiter appeared friendly but would benefit from knowing the basics, such as re-filling the water glass (much needed from eating the overly spicy food) and giving you more napkins (also much needed for having to use your hands and fingers instead of utensils). He didn't really check up on us at all, only at the end to ask if we wanted dessert. It was interesting to try a new type of cuisine but I am not planning on going back.
