GB&G remains the standard for fine American bar and grill dinning. The room always impresses as you walk in the front door. The staff is composed of real pros, no matter their ages. The menu continues to satisfy. And the kitchen continues to create towering dishes in both quality as well as in presentation. There are many newer places but GB&G remains the standard.

I went a while back, when Gotham's haning parachut lighting and "vertical presentation" were the rage, and I remember the room and the enregy more than the food. Big white cavern of a place...a lot more midtown in feelings than one expected then.

Superlative Service

The food was perfection. Foie gras terrine with quail-meat;seared foie gras with kumquat syrup; citrus-dressed mackerel fillet; an impeccably tall tower of salad. Rabbit tenderloins and baby fennel; racks of lamb; delicious cod with spring ramps. Any dinner kicked off with pink champagne has the odds on its side. But what won me was the service. I've always eaten here at lunch (a ridiculously low $20.03 prix fix) and the service is good. But this time the restaurant was packed, our table of six demanding, and the young woman who waited on us more gracious, efficient, aware and professional than any other waiter I have encountered in this city. She was there when we needed her, but never hovered, knew what we wanted before we asked, and always smiled. Not sneered. SMILED. Service of this quality makes an enormous difference to an evening out. Blood orange sorbet, warm flourless chocolate cake, tartes tatin, and an exquisite dish of ge-noo-wine petit fours with coffee. One gripe: I KNOW there is a drinkable Bordeaux available under $350.

This place has always been a favorite of mine & has never disappointed me whether for lunch or dinner. It is a big space & can get loud at certain times but the food is fabulous!

ok, i only went once. but, the food was average and the service was beyond bad. paid up for bottled water--sparkling and still--and they would mix them. on our third bottle of wine, the wine steward tried to pull a fast one and intimate the orderer to get a more expensive bottle than we had on the first two, which weren't cheap. too many good restaurant choices at this price point to risk going here.

After several so-so experiences at a few supertrendy whitehot foodie joints, my wife and I decided to remind ourselves what a three-star dining experience is supposed to be like. I may just be sentimental since I have been in love with Gotham since the 80's. It was my first serious date place, my first serious business dinner place and my place to show out of town friends what great NYC restaurants are like. Though it hasn't changed a ton over the years, I don't have a problem with that. These guys do what they do and they do it well. Food, service and that neo-industrial decor that will be back in style any moment just always deliver.
