I arrived ahead of my friends who had booked the table for a 6.30 seating, I was waived ahead to the bar in a friendly manner by the lady behind the computer but without any idea of if I should order a drink or look for the friends. They arrived soon, and there was profuse attention to what we would like to order. Excellent effort from the staff. And the food was exquisite, too.
My only question would be about the seating plans, is one expected to leave at a certain time? We lingered on with coffee and after dinner drinks beyond 9pm and the staff was clearly getting nervous. We got defensive but exited by 9.15, just feeling a little hurried. I would not even have noticed without the fact that the pre-ordering attention was so friendly, and then afterwards, a tad chilly...

My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and were looking forward to this classic restaurant. She had the seafood salad and I had the baked smoked squid. Both were exceptional both in taste and presentation. However, the entree was where we had a bit of a rough sailing. I had the New York steak. It was expertly cooked to perfection with a charred & seared outside with juicy, tender, melt in your mouth inside. However, my wife ordered the 30 day aged N.Y. sirloin well done. (This was suggested by the waiter) My wife could not finish the meal due to the strange aftertaste. I took a sample and indeed it was a bit acrid. The taste was so overwhelming, that we could not even order the dessert and coffee afterwards. It kinda ruined our dinner. The service I must say was above average but not what you would expect from an establishment of this caliber. The maturity and the ettiquette of the waiting staff was a bit off the mark too. By no means is this a bad restaurant. It is just that you expect so much from their reputation that you are bound to be let down.

Although it was incredibley expensive, I'd go here for a special occasion. The service and food was impeccible. We had a variety of food and the desserts were absolutely amazing. The wine list was extensive and the "wine guy" i feel dumb for not knowing what he's called came over and explained the prefect bottle for our meal.

This place is fantastic. I remeber going years ago as a young boy and not lioking it because witha name like "Bar & Grill" I was hoping for chicken Fingers and cheeseburgers. Now that I am a little older and have a much more refined palate I was very excited to get back and try this much talked about cusine. The place is right on par with most of these review. It was exceelent. Decor and atmosphere was right on. Service was with a smile and other than My mistake of ordering 2 very rich dishes the place is perfect. I highly recommend this place for a speacial occasion as the prioces do not fit most our budgets.

I've been to this place 3 times so far and each experience has exceeded the one before it. Fantastic food, amazing service and great atmosphere.
The last time we went was for my birthday and Chef Portale gave us 2 surprise free courses, an signed copy of The Gotham Cook Book and a dessert that wasnt even on the menu yet.
One of the best dining experiences you are likely to have in your life.

If you want great food and a wonderful atmosphere, this is the place to go! The service was impeccable and the wine list extensive. My halibut was exceptional and my boyfriend and I even received a dessert that was not yet on the menu. The people here take care of you and you get your money's worth.

Every menu item is excellently prepared. Their steak is as good as any of the fine steakhouses. Desserts are fantastic

Not worth the Guide Michelin star

This isnt a bad restaurant, its just too haussed up and too expensive for the quite average experience it is. Some points of concern; the waiter was hardly a somelier but more than that, he was very uninterested in getting involved in the choosing of wine. His suggestions came down to "Chardonnay" or "Zinfandel" as opposite to knowing the wine, its dryness/sweetness, the vineyard etc. I think he was even stressed out about having to answer/discuss, this is something you expect and see at any American restaurant, perhaps at Gotham you expect more. The food is not bad but not something special either or at all I should say. Just because one has foie gras on the menu, it doesn't make the place special or recommendable, it perhaps impresses some people. There was hence no food experience in that sense, its just basic menu food which is presented that way. All in all too expensive and definetely not a guide Michelin star probably received due to lack of good restaurants in NY sadly but hopefully this can change!

GB&G remains the standard for fine American bar and grill dinning. The room always impresses as you walk in the front door. The staff is composed of real pros, no matter their ages. The menu continues to satisfy. And the kitchen continues to create towering dishes in both quality as well as in presentation. There are many newer places but GB&G remains the standard.
