I love Gottino; its my special brunch place. I love the relaxed... read a book or chat with a friend... kind of atmosphere and their really good coffee. I enjoy sitting at the bar, watching the staff prepare food (which always looks and tastes yummy). The staff is courteous and attentive enough (as opposed to "suffocatingly" attentive).

Cute decor and quiet, intimate atmosphere inside. When I was there (weeknight around 6:30) the place was not noisy at all, it would be lovely for a date or catching up with a friend if you want to have an actual conversation. The crostini and rabbit pot pie are both excellent. My only gripe would be the service. It wasn't bad at all, just very confusing who to order from. Grabbing the attention of a busy bartender is a hard way to order additional food and I didn't see any staff that were clearly designated as waiters. It's a little pretentious when you walk in (they didn't greet me) but once you start ordering they warm up and share their knowledge freely.

Deserved Pretension

Walked in on a whim, with no idea what the place was about. First of all, the place is gorgeous. The marble bar is significant, and decor is so well thought through; I was seriously impressed. You feel like you've left New York for a moment.... but then... ah yes... the wait staff. Now, if I was dressed in a bow tie and full-front apron, I'd probably act a little important too, but these guys are too much. Me and my 26 year old friends, all of whom work in the industry and with wine, were treated like NYU trash. We kinda laughed it off, but it hurt. Price points were reasonable for a place that clearly has a lot of overhead. Wine selections were excellent, but you can't read the menu: it's black printed on gray. I guess I just wish the tone was a little more approachable, instead of feeling like you were going to break something.

I read the reviews on the site and didn't have very high expectations for this place, but actually it turned out great. Very friendly waitstaff dealing with a cramped space. Service was snappy. I went with a few friends, tried all the crostini and had the duck. A boozy night, very satisfying.

This place was great. I went on a date here during a week night and had a wonderful experience. The food was fantastic (i remember the liver pate with peaches...amazing!) and of course great wine. It wasnt very busy, so Im not sure how the service would be on a weekend night, but I dont have any complaints. I will certainly go back!

We went to Gottino on a Friday. So it didn't surprise us to find the counter full. There was no waiting list, but we assumed they knew what they were doing. I can't comment on the quality of the food, because WE NEVER GOT TO TRY IT. After 30 minutes of waiting, two girls pushed past the line to grab the next 2 seats to open. The bartender did nothing but glance at us and lean in to talk to the girls, who apparently he knew. I don't go to places like Gottino to be blown away by the food and wine. I go to feel the welcome of a cozy neighborhood spot. Gottino should have been this, but until it recognizes that running a restaurant is as much about taking care of people as it is about keeping the Berkel meat-slicer shiny, it won't be. A note to the staff: We had dinner at the bar at Babbo instead. When we sat down the bartender smiled and said "We're glad to have you." Now that's not so hard, is it?

I enjoyed my first visit to Gottino, so much, I'm going back tonight. I enjoy eating at bars in restaurants, but lately their has been too many amateurs behind the bar invading my space that I have been reconsidering this choice. Gottino has enticed me back to the bar. The two bartenders working that night were charming and professional and never annoying or invasive. I don't eat at the bar because I'm lonely. Oh, and the food and wine, amazing.

Perfect sunday winter afternoon lunch

This place hit the spot on a cold February afternoon. Cozy, hip and tiny with superb ingredients, best in NYC which is very high praise. Friendly young staff. Our only critical comment is it's pricey - 150.00 for two with the tip. 4 glasses wine, a modest number of plates, dessert and espresso. Was so good I did't wince too much. The gelato is a bit overrated however - had better, fresher tasting flavors other places. We'll be back.

It may have helped that we showed up before 7pm, but when I entered I got one of the warmest greetings that I've experienced in my NYC dining history. The owner was at the bar and she made me feel really welcome. The plates are small, but everything is very tasty. Perhaps don't come starving because the bill, with wine averaging $12 a glass, can elevate quickly. Short of that I highly recommend Gottino for both its edibles and the enjoyable, festive atmosphere. A lot of what is the best about dining in NYC is here-- simple, high quality, well-prepared food, an aesthetically pleasing setting and a fun, unpretentious atmosphere.
