What a Rip Off

This was by far one of the worst meals I have ever eaten in NYC. We could not get reservations until 11:00 PM, and were then greeted with a forced pre fixe menu with an overwhelming amount of meat and shellfish. The food was heavily buttered, totally uninspired and poorly cooked. Even the dessert, while visually appealing, was disappointing. This is a perfect example of undeserved hype. Luckily we were paying with a gift certificate so the biggest expense was our time, tastebuds and taxis.

When a restaurant is hyped it can be disappointing. Food offerings were limited & were a far cry from extraordinary. The waiter poured sparking water in my flat, basically the flow of the floor was off. The service was sweet, but not knowledgeable. The only enjoyable part was the decor and dessert. Over-rated restaurant.
Go if you must, but stick with the bar

Unfortunatley the food was not as good as some other upper-end restuarants (such as Union Square Cafe). The service, while courteous and prompt, was a little stuffy and self conscious. The bar was excellent as was the decor. The best part of my dinner was a complemntary lima-bean sampler. My wife and I are still trying to figure out what exactly the "lima bean dish" was, b/c after dropping $250 we'd like to know. So, should you go?? I'd recommend Union Square, Brasserie 8 1/2, or even Balthazar over this place. If you've already been to these places and you must go, then go ahead. But i bet you wont find it too memorable and chances are you wont go back.

So as a visitor from Los Angeles on a business trip I thought that I would indulge in my expense account and take a trip to a very well known often highly touted culinary adventure. While I was impressed with the service and concept of the Gramercy Tavern, I was left unsatisfied with the food. While I was pleasantly suprised by the imagination of the menu and the combinations of flavors such simple things as the heat of the food and the seasoning (extremely salty) was unacceptable. I think that this will be my first and final trip to Gramercy Tavern.

I was so thrilled to take my out of town guests for an unforgettable dining experience - sadly, I got my wish. I don't think any of us will soon forget this evening - from the bland, average food, unsurprising entries, an enormous bill and upset stomachs at home, it was an unbelievable disappointment. There were brussel sprouts in nearly every course on the spring tasting menu, and other than one kiwi dessert, the menu lacked creativity and unique flavor of any sort. The service was excellent, but could not make up for the food...

A special family occasion was marred by terrible service. Our waitress was surly and rude. Queries about the menu were curtly responded to. While the decor is elegant and the food delicious, we felt most unwelcome and would never return.

We were pretty disappointed. The menu lacked imagination & wasnt as special as we had hoped. Cod was featured on the menu! A very cheap fish for such an expensive restaurant. Service was the highlight but the food was just ok. Dessert was terrific. Overall, not worth the expense. Decor was special & romantic, but we expected more for the kitchen.

I dont know what it is exactly but I really like this restaurant. It doesnt have the best food or decor but it is in fact a great experience. The staff is experienced and skilled with regards to both wine and the food they serve, and they are plesant, professional and service minded. The food is like some better league restaurants which dont/hasnt reach perfection and continutity; a bit of gambling, one dish can come in and give you a real gastonomique experience and then be followed by something unbalanced and far from an experience... I really would recommend this restaurant to anyone though, its only real problem being that it is far too expensive for what it brings out on its plates!
