from the reviews, i was expecting blow-your-mind delicious. it was definitely good food, especially for brooklyn, but not up there with the top manhattan restaurants. the garden area is very nice. the duck was very juicy. i highly recommend the smoked mackerel appetizer.

I had the best damn duck of my life at The Grocery. ok.... It was really crowded, really small, and everyone sat on top of each other. that was the only bad part though. The rest...great service, TERRIFIC food, wonderful wine, and a nice visit to the table by the chef made up for it. I will be going back again in the summer.

We had no problem getting a Thursday night reservation for 4 (seated at 9:30, out by 11:30). The waitstaff apologized for making us wait for our main courses, but we were provided 2 amuse bouches in the waiting period after the appetizers. Octopus and foie gras terrine appetizers were good. Duck and Monkfish entrees were great. Too full for dessert. Exotic beer selection compliments a full wine list. Great place, very romantic and cozy.

A reason for Brooklynites to be Smug: Wonderful Food Done with Care

The Grocery is a prime example of why Brooklynites feel smug: We've got the best of Manhattan without the attitude or price. Zagat expectations aside, dining at the Grocery is a wonderful experience. The food is deeply satisfying. Most remarkable is the rich flavor contained in each item, from well seasoned fish to fully flavorful side dishes like spaetzle. I appreciate a restaurant that gives each item such lavish attention. Luckily one half of the ownership focuses her attention on desserts, so after a wonderful meal one can enjoy an equally wonderful dessert. I'm not a big chocolate fan, but the chocolate fig cake is memorable for its creative use of figs.

When I got there on a Tuesday night only one other couple was there. Within five minutes, they seated another couple right beside us almost on top of us, despite there being ample seating elsewhere. I could smell the lady's breath from my seat, the entire time I ate. I got the veggie plate as a entree, and I felt it should of have larger portions because there really was only a bite of each thing. My boyfriend also got snubbed on the portions, he ordered some lobster thing with cauliflower. There was a ton of cauliflower but only 3 bites of lobster (I am not exaggerating). We had desert, the apple cobbler. This was also very disapointing. It had a tiny slab of ice cream, was dull and dry. The thing that really set me off was that when we left after desert, this place was still nowhere near full in seating. Don't plan on having a romantic dinner here, or do if you dont want to talk to them. Also, server didnt know specials.

My Girlfriend and I enjoyed a birthday dinner at the Grocery in September. We were lucky enough to sit outside in the very sweet and smallish garden. Green market fruit salad, locally baked bread, incredibly creative Hen of the Woods/french fry salad, and beautiful entrees. This was a whole meal. Every aspect was complimentary. It felt as if we were at a brilliant dinner party. it must be the best in brooklyn.

Definitely worth the trek out to the Brooklyn for this exquisite dining tour de fource with sensational tasting menus and a moderately priced wine list. Service is a little hurried due to the enormous popularity but the staff do go the extra mile to make sure that the food is worth the wait.

Very small (seats about 20 people) and does not have any waiting room inside so beware on cold/rainy nights. I was able to make a friday night reservation on 3 days notice. Appetizers: pate special was excellent, as was the beet and goat cheese salad. The bacon appetizer however was very mediocre. I had a duck confit served over risotto for my main course. The risotto was fair, nothing to write home about but the duck was excellent - very tasty and tender and with a nice crispy skin. The desserts were great, from top to bottom. In particular the pudding and the banana flambe. The service was excellent; unobtrusive but attentive, knowledgeable and polite. Only mistake was that we ordered champagne and they gave us sparkling wine. The bill for 6 people, including one bottle of wine (an excellent cabernet blend) and the sparkling wine was $331 The crowd ranges from mid-30's - 50's. Dress is smart casual – no jeans/sneakers, though they probably wouldn't have a big problem with it. Go without an attitude – they are not going to kiss your ass, just make sure you have a pleasant dinner. It's fine dining with a brooklyn flava.

Very very disappointing place. First, it's difficult to get a table; second (unlike many restaurants in Bklyn) they make you wait 45 minutes after the time of your reservation (and outside!)... Then the food comes... Too complex and too creative. The duck, the octopus, the scallops were average... Only dessert was good(apple cobbler)... Will never go back!

After 2 disappointing visits to the Grocery, I will never go back. The food was very average with aluminum foil-like silverware and cheap heavy plateware with very sloppy presentations. The staff seemed aggitated and somber with a lot of shouting coming from the kitchen. The owners too eager and overshadowing the waitstaff. Something's fishy about this place. Not worth your time or deserving of such a high rating. I'd give it a 17! Next time I'll go to Saul, an amazing Smith street restaurant that deserves far more attention for its fantastic food, decor, and staff.
