What passes for Cajun and Creole in NYC is a shame, but Gumbo Cafe never disappoints. The chef here has REALLY got it down--and don't underestimate the thrill of watching him dish up your plate and then bring it to you! The restaurant is clean, but shoebox-sized, so I guess a waitstaff would just take up space. It can get hot in there in the summer (like New Orleans) and you have to bring your own alcohol, but so what! The perfect rice, the gumbo (meat AND vegetarian varieties) and the red beans and rice are awesome! Everything is just the right consistency, "heat" (as in spice), and portion. Plus they have sarsaparilla powder, or "feelay" (I have no idea how you'd spell that), on hand if you ask for it. Now THAT'S the true sign you're eating authentic Creole cooking. Bring someone you like as this is no place for formalities!

Great gumbo, friendly service, great prices. A wonderful addition to the neighborhood

I tried going yesterday with my husband, only to discover after a 90 minute haul to the upper west side that Gumbo Cafe is now closed on Mondays, not Tuesdays. And they don't answer the phone or have an answering machine message. Never been, so I can't speak to the food, but so far a bit disappointed.

I have not found taste of New Orleans in the two and a half decades I've been in New York. When I opened the door the smell told my stomach "you're home", the Gumbo Cafe delivers that home flavor better than some of the places I tried in the French Quarters. Don't forget to try the pecan pie! Louisiana native.

We brought friends with us, telling them about how NY Mag raved about this place. Man, were we embarrassed. One guy was so grossed out, he went home to sip pepto. Don't waste your time or money on the cab ride.
