A group of friends and I went to dinner tonight at Hecho in Dumbo for the first time and were definetely floored by the quality of the food. Based on previous reviews, I was concerned service was going to be slow, but the food came out on time. Sopas de pollo were delicious, as were the quesadillas with mushrooms - as there were no squash blossoms that evening. The one thing that APPALLED me was the ventilation. We were seated at the back table, under a vent, funneling air from the kitchen - not only did we walk out wreaking of kitchen fumes, my eyes were red and watery and itchy. Waiter simply said, oh yeah, ventilation is bad in here, I'll open a window. Don't sit in the back under the vent!!

This place has very tasty food, a nice atmosphere in which to eat it, and all very reasonably priced. They also have a decent draft beer selection. We shared tacos and burritos of every variety and the beef and pork were our favorites - tender, full of flavor and succulent. Make sure you ask for salsa's on the side. We also tried several specials - which were all very good - when the bill came, we couldn't believe the value - a great experience.

Have been here quite a few times now, and believe it or not, I still have nothing to complain about (which is rare when dining mulitple times at nyc eateries). Service has always been great. I was surprised by the previous review regarding the service. This has never been my experience. Food is excellent and the atmosphere is very cool. We will continue to go back, and back, and back, and back!

I came to Hecho en Dumbo last weekend and had a fantastic time. The portions may run on the small side, but the prices are low. This makes it easy to order a number of the delicious dishes, which is exactly what my dining partner and I did. We got to sample an assortment of plates, and we both loved the pork tacos and the crab tostadas. Also highly recommended is the guacamole, which is easily the best in NYC. The band was really good (if a little loud), and added an exciting element to the general ambience. The waitstaff is lovely, both in manners and appearance! This is some of the best Mexican that i have had, either in NY or Mexico.

I AM a "chilango" living in NY on business. I was VERY disappointed --not by the food, which has an OUTSTANDING flavor, but by the appallingly bad, slow service. No napkins / silverware (had to stand and get myself), warm beer, cold food (good but cold), the table was cleared 20 min after we finished. The place WAS NOT packed, so no excuse. The food would make the trip from Manhattan worth it, but the service killed it for me.

When living in England I shared a house with three Chilangos and fell in love with Mexican food. Visits to Mexico City only increased this love. Hecho in Dumbo serves exactly the type of exquisite food you can find in 'el DF', in a slightly more refined version thanks to the delicate salsas. The atmosphere is laid-back at the start of the evening and gets more festive around 10pm with live music (I was there on a Thursday night). Simply love this place. The only drawback is that they should install a decent extractor in the kitchen, the windows got all damped and walking out my clothes smelled like chipotle...

I am from Mexico City and I also lived in California before. Tacos are supposed to be "super small", a huge double tortilla with lettuce and pico de gallo on top of the meat might be Cal-Mex, or Tex-Mex food, but tacos are not served like that in Mexico. The thin and small tortillas at Hecho en Dumbo were warm and tasty, unlike the big, thick, raw tortillas served at most places in California and other places in NY. I also like the molletes, which are made with bolillo bread. The molletes from Hecho en Dumbo reminded me of those I use to eat in Mexico City. And, as far as sangria..well, the traditional Mexican sangria is made with vodka and wine, this person is thinking of Spanish sangria, which has fruit.. I would suggest this person orders a sangria at La Opera in downtown Mexico City. The sopes were served like they are supposed to be, a bit crunchy. I loved the food and I found the place to be nicely decorated. My experience was completely different than this reviewer, so I would suggest people try Hecho en Dumbo for themselves!

Another Sub-Par Mexican Place

Being raised in LA and of Mexican descent, I am always searching for that one place that actually serves good, real Mexican food that isn't haute cuisine. That is what I thought this place would be after reading the review. First of all it is a place of 'antojitos'; which translates into tiny portions, that does not a dinner make. The tacos are three super small corn tortillas with barely any filling. The sopes with chorizo lacked the salty, spicy goodness of chorizo and the corn masa was hard, too crunchy and not even warm. I didn't even try the 'molletes' because they were made with ciabatta bread and mozzarella cheese...so basically an Italian panini? Also the drinks were really sub-par. The 'sangria' was made with vodka, no fruit and just tasted like vodka and wine. And don't even go there with the churros; they were little inch long overdone pieces of fried batter with a chocolate sauce that was basically badly made, flavorless Mexican hot chocolate. Lastly, the tortillas, which they claim are made fresh were thin, cold dried pieces of flour and water.
