I visited this establishment having learned about it from some friends. Little did I know I lived 6 blocks from Heidelberg while I attended college! The over the top décor is the first thing you notice after the smell of rustically seasoned braten wafts though your nose. The sweet German woman who seated me was nothing short of a welcoming frau with things to do, but appreciates your company. I ordered, from the lunch menu, Schweinbraten with a side of Spaetzle and an oktoberfest. The service wasn’t speedy, but wasn't slow either. I received my brew and a basket of bread (pumpernickel, white, hearty pine nut) and enjoyed the music while others enjoyed their company and meals. The entree arrived. The meat was so delicate and perfectly prepared, I was almost tempted to eat half and take the rest home to savor it more later. But, that would be ridiculous. The sauerkraut was so appropriately seasoned and authentic, my grandmother would be in awe. The experience was pleasant and nostalgic. I will return to Heidelberg often and bring more people with me. Take some time to enjoy this place.

If you want to wait an hour for a beer, another hour (=2 total) for food, and never see a waitress again to order another beer, by all means try this place. It really isn't worth it - so many better German places that you don' t need to get worked up during dinner because of the service in NYC.

Walking into the place was like entering an inviting oak lined black forest drinking hall during the height of Oktoberfest - very cool! First I sampled the house specialty appetizer - a round of camembert cheese (similar in look and feel to brie but a bit firmer with an Alsatian richness) delicately fried and served with a sweet syruped pear and a cranberry compote; the contrasting tastes of the sharp richness of the cheese cointerpointed with the sweetness of the fruit resulting in a palate pleasing and delicious aperitif - the pairing was successful and delicious! I then eagerly ordered another house specialty - the 3 sausage plate: bauernwurst (a coarse textury country sausage with a mustard bite), weisswurst (a velvety white sausage made of veal and pork with a smooth richness), & bratwurst (a Bavarian standard of smoky chopped meat and highly spiced) - which appropriately came with healthy mounds of warm and tangy sauerkraut, an equally sizeable molehill of tasty shredded red cabbage and the finest brown mustard to make the greasy goodness of the sausages explode forth on awaiting tastebuds! All in all I heartily recommend Heidelberg, a place of great food that will truly set you free!

My son took me to Heidelbergs for a late lunch and I just loved it! I felt like I was eating in my mothers kitchen. The decor & the gentleman playing the music was great. I had the Saurbraten & dumpling - it was fantastic. I only wish there were 2 dumplings. I also had the cucumber salad-just like moms. My son had the potato pancakes he loved them and the red cabbage was great too. My daughter had some kind of egg breakfast & she cleaned her plate plus she had the german chocolate cake too! I highly recomend going there if you can appreciate authentic German food.
