I love this place! They have great food. Try the homemade tofu/edamame burger, you won't regret it!

Hope They Keep Being Nice To You

As a "local", I have been going to this diner for over 3 years now. Because frankly there is nothing else in the area. At first, I was charmed by all the nice attention and "better" diner food options. But the more I kept coming the more I experienced terrible things. It went from bad to worse... Like an abusive lover you keep coming back to... If you go on a regular basis, please share your sentiments. I'd like to start a therapy group. I was a very loyal customer and an extremely generous tipper and overtime I found myself being ignored, talked back in condescending ways, my privacy invaded and saw the staff disintegrate into bullies from hell. Most karaoke nights are fun for the first time but if you go back often you will see the inconsistencies and their lack of professionalism. The more tip you give them the more entitled they get. Take note. It's a strange place... You'll never see me there again...

IKEA draws us to explore Red Hook & Van Brunt restaurant scene

Yes, we are a guilty Manhattan couple that took the free IKEA water taxi and decided to make a day out of Red Hook after the IKEA opening and reading about the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition. We started the afternoon out with a walk up and down Van Brunt street where we stumbled on Hope & Anchor. What a gem of a find. We chatted with several locals, but we also saw many misplaced Manhattanites sipping Bloody Marys and trying to fit in. Food was outstanding--try the Mac & cheese. A guilty pleasure and they serve it up right here with ham, chorizo or other add ins. Bottom line; take a trip to Red Hook--you know it's worth it. Make a day out of it--we did, great success!

i found lots of flies buzzing around... the menu was great but the bugs were a turn off

Seems To Do It All

Hard to beleive it but H&A has been doing it for almost three years now. And they do so much so well. Killer brunch. Great dinner entrees. Creative salads. Maybe the best burger in Brooklyn. AND dirt cheap prices. I cannot even think of a place to compare them to. Then they segue into a relaxing bar during the week, and on weekends the best karaoke venue I've ever seen. And I have always hated karaoke. They were there first, I give them credit for bringing thousands of people to vist Red Hook. They lead the renaissance. And they still do it all best.

Like a Friend I have a Soft Spot For

Here is my caveat: I haven't been there in many months. But last year I went to Hope and Anchor quite a lot, and my sentiment for it went from strong to wavering, mostly because the food and service seemed to be heading downhill. That being said, the atmosphere is fabulous especially on karaoke nights. The trip to Red Hook is such fun but you do need a bike or car unless you live down there. At its best the food is perfect American basics like a scrumptious cobb salad. And the banana cream pie is amazing!!! On a good night, the neighborhood feel led to great service, but on a bad night my waitress was frustratingly not attentive. So for being a lovely place with perfect atmosphere, I want to love Hope and Anchor. But with service and food seeming to slide, I sometimes ended up defending a restaurant I should not be so quick to love.

Anything Goes

It's difficult to believe that in two-plus years this Red Hook destination has yet to be reviewed by one overwhelmingly satisfied customer or another. Come here for the inventive cocktail and beer menu, comfort food taken up a few notches, and the welcoming crew. Depending on the time of day or night, you may find yourself discussing the future of Red Hook with a neighborhood "regular" over coffee at the bar, cooing over a cute toddler having an early dinner with his cooler-than-cool artist parents, or, on a late weekend evening, singing (or even aisle-dancing) with your new-found friends at the next table, while everyone's favorite karaoke "lady" orchestrates that night's affair. This is not a place to miss when in Red Hook!
