The best Italian food I've eaten outside of Italy

I've eaten a fair amount of Italian food: both in America and in Italy (in Rome, Naples, and Sicily), and eating at Il Buco is the best American approximation I've had of the authentic Italian dining experience. Very fresh and lively flavors: standouts were the smoked gambas crusted with Trappanese sea salt, a summer squash salad, and the octopus. The signature pork belly on ciabatta was a bit too fatty for me, but everything else was wonderful. I didn't have any problem with the portions (as some other reviewers have complained). The way to eat here is to order a number of the dishes and share them. My date and I were referred by a friend of mine who knows the chef, and we let the chef choose our dishes. We were inundated with food, and some things like the salads were whipped up especially for us. I'll definitely be back.

We just had our third dining experience at Il Buco. This is a true delight for food afficionados--unfortunately wasted on some reviewers who cannot distinguish fine food from large quantities of food. The decor is enchanting, the servers understand the food and the subtlety of ingredients, and the prices are commensurate with a superior dining experience. The wine list is heavenly, but the sommeliere has both feet on the ground. Salud!

A freind and I stumbled upon Il Buco for lunch today- and now it will be a great inside joke. The decor, I must admit, is great (and what sucked us in) and would be a great spot for a romantic night -if you aren't hungry. The server was efficient and more than in the know about wine when asked. She even mentioned that the appetizer portions weren't large- but it seems some cruel joke when you see the size of portions and the price of the same. A two bite appetizer that's $15 is a bit much even in New York. The couple at the next table (tables in this front area are about 6 inches apart) seemed as shocked as we were when the food was served. Price is only an issue if you don't feel like you ate- my friend had to get something to eat an hour later. My artichoke appetizer was a little on the bland side. The portion of egg pasta was ample, but the Lamb Ragu was a little bland and not very abundant. Charming interior but leave time after your meal to stop for a bite to eat.

The gorgeous atmosphere of Il Buco can be fabulous or a nightmare. No one wants to sit at a big communal table, but if you can score an intimate one, it's great. The wine cellar is an amazing place for a large party, but could be considered creepy and cold for just a couple. Food showcases fresh, top notch ingredients. Food of this quality SHOULD be served in small portions and be savored. The prices are thus fair. If you are looking for a large pile of cheap food, this place is not for you. Amazing wine list! Order many appetizers and share an entree!

Not what it is cracked up to be, very disappointing. Went in after a show at the 45 Bleecker St. Theatre. The restaurant was not full, but we were seated in the cold and dark wine cellar, where there was one other large party. We were seated next to the meat locker. The service was slow but informative. The cod appetizer was very good, but small. The ravioli was bland and again a small portion. Pana Cotta good but very rich. The menu is larger than the portions served.

I find it hard to genuinely describe the food as "inspired" - as it says in Zagat - that accolade must be accorded to Lupa rstaurant! There is a slightly tired feel to this place, the appetizers are by far the most interesting dishes, and a magnificent wine list. The main courses are varied, but for good pasta dishes, I would say there are many better places to go. Pretty much all the food is over-priced. The serving staff do their best in the cramp environment, but service can seem rushed and rude.

In this area, I never expected to come across such an incredible restaurant. I was completely enchanted by the room, the service, the food (have the mackerel, the sardines or the monkfish liver). This place is the unsung hero of real Umbrian cuisine...you must go if you enjoy hidden delights with no scene attached.

If you like bad food and sharing a table with strangers than this is the place for you. This place is far from romantic. The only reason they dim the lights is to hide the small portions on your plate and maybe all the fat in their meat.
Great Decor, Mediocre Food, Bad Service

When it took 20 minutes for the waiter to take our order, I suspected there might be a problem. When asked for a wine recommendation and the waiter's response was, "its your choice" it was pretty clear. But when we had finished our truly uninspired fare, we were disappointedly certain: Il Buco is completely over-rated.
great for groups

It kind of reminds me of one of those restaurants attached to ABC carpets-you feel like you are in a place that isnt supposed to be a restaurant. It is very cozy and the people are really friendly and warm. But it is not very private and you can wind up sharing a table-the place is full of long rustic wooden tables and chairs-so it is not a good date spot-it is great for a group of 10, say. The food was really divine, but not the best italian I have ever had, although the menu is quite interesting. I would return in a heartbeat for a bday dinner or something.
