Best restaurant in Midtown

Easily the best restaurant in Midtown - finally a place that is interesting, sophisticated and well executed arrives in Midtown. Normally you have to go downtown for this kind of experience. The space is very elegant, the menu is interesting, the service casual but intelligent, the food is bursting with flavor and the wines perfectly match the food. What more can you ask for? I have been here twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both times - this will be a regular stop for me. I went with my wife a couple weeks ago and with clients last night - this restaurant is perfect for both types of occasions.

Granted we went to Insieme during the first 10 days after opening, but having lived in Italy, this is far from being an authentic upscale Italian restaurant. First it does not have an authentic Italian environment. The front desk staff and wait staff would not know an Italian restaurant if they fell over it. After not honoring our seating request, as we sat in a box car like line of two seaters, we were served by a non-Italian knowledgeable waiter. The bread looked and tasted like a dry rotting potato. Then the chef tastes arrived; radishes stuffed with olive oil, which were impossible to eat, and some barely edible broth with pasta. The fish crudo appetizers were mediocre. But it was the pastas that were really bad. The linguine that was not al dente but rather mushy. Even the Ruth Reichl endorsed lasagna was mediocre (Ruth call me and I will tell you about a far better place). We could not bear going any further. To the credit of the management, they deducted the over cooked pasta from the check, but the damage was done. This is not an authentic Italian restaurant. It will not work in Manhattan.
