Please do not go here! Categorizing Jefferson under "in spot" and "bar scene" is completely misleading. Food was awful- ribeye is like a tv dinner and red snapper is bathed in coconut- yuck! Service is slow and unattentive. Overpriced, just plain bad. Small menu too.

Friends were in town visiting for a few days and I suggested, for their final night in town, Jefferson. Boy what I mistake!
After we were seated 40 minutes after our reservation time, we got the waitress from hell. After ordering wine, which took her 30 minutes to bring, she had no idea of simple questions regarding the menu. Then she proceeded to spill water all over 3 out of 4 of us without an apology! Main course came without the second bottle of wine and our meal got cold. She got the dessert order wrong. We ordered the cheese plate not the cheese cake. It was 3 hours of pure hell. I have gotten better service at the McD's down the street! Beware of the strawberry blonde, curly haired waitress.
One the top side the food was quite good but the service was so bad and there are so many other good restaurants, it's just not worth it!

The food was really good, very interesting use of ingredients, surprising flavors, great presentation... makes dining out really fun. The waiter was attentive and very nice but I don;t think he is sure of what he is doing or familiar with the menu/wine list. I had the 2-way duck (amazing), mushroom/seaweed broth (fantastic). And I didn;t have a problem getting a reservation the day of... what more can I ask for?

The Jefferson is our favorite date-night restaurant - we've been several times and it's always delicious, the staff have always been attentive and nice and we love the room. You can also always get a resevation the night-of, and we've never had to wait for our table. We're so happy it's in our neighborhood!

After a few changes in the kitchen combo, this restaurant is making real strong music in the food world of NYC. This beautiful, minimalist design room with muted light is warm yet futuristic. The staff is congenial and (basically) quite knowing and experienced. Our meals were exceptional from a beautiful silken tuna appetizer with a buttery vinaigrette to perfectly poached halibut with enoki mushrooms and cauliflower puree, sauteed duck in fennel powder to the standout lobster with mussel nage. We were so happy we almost left before the best desserts in the city! The new pastry chef, Caryn Stabinsky, is a creative marvel, with her lightest cheesecake, delicious valrhona with citrus center cake, pomegranate pudding to an unusual but amazing pairing of chocolate pot de creme with mustard paper. Go! You deserve it.

We were coming into the city for a special family dinner around Thanksgiving. My older son questioned about the policy for bringing wine. Initally we were told that no outside wine was allowed. We then were informed that the corkage fee was $17 per bottle. During dinner for ten we were told that each bottle beyond three would be twice that quoted. In all we spent over $700 for food and instead of the quoted corkage I payed about 50% more. We no doublt would have found a wine friendly restaurant if we had been told honestly what the policy would be. The food was good and the decor pleasing but the expeicince was soured.

The hostess lacked the attitude that sometimes comes w/ crowded new places downtown. She was very friendly, organized and got us to our table on time. We had no problems with the wait staff and thought the food was fantastic! The ingredient combinations work well together. Snapper and scallop entrees were great. Enjoyed the pot stickers for dessert. Portions were not great, but still think there is good value here considering other places/prices.

I completely disagree with this review. This is not a "welcome addition" to the neighborhood. It's a chilly outsider, breezing in with obscure, unfriendly food, obscure unfriendly service in an obscure unfriendly room. At obscure, unfriendly prices-- portions are tiny, and while entrees are $20-$28, they pull the appetizer trick of pushing those prices into the $10-$15 range. This type of restaurant is just wrong for NY at this moment.

We waited for 45 minutes beyond our reservation time. The tablecloth was stained and the service was agonizingly slow. It seemed as if it were the their first evening in business. The food, though good, was not worth the experience.
