Uptight owners. Short and curly in the maguro. Expensive and not at all worth it. Horrible experience.

Jewel Bako was incredibly disappointing. Not only was the food mediocre, but the owner was pompous, dismissive and inflexible. He openly refused to accomodate special requests. Would absolutely NOT recommend this restaurant under any circumstances - hefty bill, unsatisfying food and downright unpleasant service.

With an $85 tasting menu, I expect my water to be refilled, but I had to ask several times. The food was truly mediocre, bland and it's accompanied by a long explanation as to what each piece is. It barely matters since most things taste exactly as they do at a cheap sushi place. The soup was salty and dull. We left the chocolate dessert, which wasn't as good as an Entenmann's doughnut. The bench is uncomfortable. In short, give me Sushi of Gari or Nobu for this kind of money. This place is pretentious and ridiculous.

FACT: New Yorkers will not settle for rudeness, slow-motion service, and sub-par food for very long. Jewl Bako is run by Snobs, and that mentality wafts throughout this sleek little sushi joint. The food is nothing special, but the service is in a word...Pathetic. We waited out in the freezing cold for an HOUR for a RESERVATION! Our meal was then served over the next 2 hours, and could not have been worse. In 25 years the worst dining expirience we have ever has in New York.

OVERRATED, PRETENTIOUS OWNER

We were excited about trying Jewel Bako because of the positive reviews it received in magazines. However, the entire experience was a huge disappointment. First and foremost, the owner, Jack Lamb, was pretentious and outright rude. He made our dining experience incredbly unpleasant, we waited forever for service. The food was mediocre and way overpriced. The saki list was decent, but that is the only positive thing about this place. There are too many "adventurous" and wonderful Japanese restaurants to goto, than a sham sushi-joint like Jewel Bako. My message to Jack "give up the attitude! It makes you look like a little man, and does great disservice to your establishment."

Overpriced and overrated!

Don't even bother ordering the Tuna Toro Tartare. For $15 you get some tuna the size of a fifty cent piece with a little avacado on top. And to twist the knife they serve it to you on a really big plate so you know you're really paying for it. This place was a total rip-off. They try so hard to be hip and cool that they fail to impress. Waste of time and money.

I had heard lots of good things about the place so was quite surprised when we were treated so badly by the staff. The food was okay but the experience was totally ruined by the rude unpleasant staff. Not worth it.

Upon walking in, you immediately notice the extraordinary design, small and intimate with a rounded bamboo ceiling. We were an excited table of six ready to try it all only to find that the sushi and the service were very disappointing. Our server never told us about the specials, but when asked, he raved about their amazing array of sea urchin. I ordered the recommended soft sweet one. However, when dinner came, they were out of ALL the varieties so they brought fatty tuna... REALLY!?! Then we were excited to order the scorpion fish because it sounded really interesting, but our waiter replied- It's just black cod... Two people from our party had ordered the tasting menu that included the "black cod," which was bland... what a surprise. The tasting menu, itself, just seamed to be random sushi that had no thought of what spices and sauces would bring out the flavor of the fish. The fish was fresh, but so what- it's sushi. It 's supposed to be fresh! A few hours later, after some wine at a nearby wine bar, we went for pizza-- Exciting, tasty, and served with a smile!

Nice food, shame about the service

We were told that if we were hungry, we should have the tasting menu. Indeed, the food did not disappoint -- some of the freshest sushi I had ever experienced. However, considering the cost of the meal, we were left feeling the service was a farce - absolutely terrible. Also, the place is a little too cramped for my liking.

Jewel Bako is among the best places in NY for suhis and sashimis. Both fresh and high quality fish, great list of sakes, but overpriced wines. Unfortunately, the "service" makes the whole experience *really* unpleasant. Not only it is pretentious, slow and rude, but the lady running the place has a serious attitude problem. And if she make mistakes in your order (despite us having repeated it three times), do not expect any kind of apologizes.
