1AM, Burgers and Abuse
By mikey790 on 3/25/2014
You know the drill.. you stumble into the street, into the night air of Manhattan. That's when someone from your ensemble utters: burgers! You're not hungry, or rather you *weren't* hungry, until you heard it. Burgers. An epic notion. You're drawn to the glow of their sign, like a tractor beam. Enter. Sit. Wait. It's at this point you're attended to by a member of the waitstaff, who looks at you all like your presense is an utter inconvenience. And then it's burgers and beers, assembled around your table, as assigned. And, oh boy, should you have a complaint about your order; the thoroughness of the cook-through, or the neglect of cheese.. my the good lord have mercy on your soul. The waiter will retell the tale of your order, like he was a courtroom stenographer. Now, let it be known that if evening after evening, drunk burger-hunters were my clientele I too might be a surly, aggrevated man. So, I shall grant him some latitude, and consider his erstwhile dreams. Oh, and how were the burgers you ask? I was proper drunk, and ate the whole damn thing.. so, I suspect it was pretty tastey.
Travel Channel was Right!
By nickyc1983 on 7/24/2013
After reading some reviews on here I was very skeptical about coming despite rave reviews from the Travel Channel. I figured the staff would treat Tv personalities kind but maybe the real attitudes are for the everyday person. But i have to say me and my girlfriend had NO Problems with the staff. We ate lunch there on a weekday at around 12:15, Seated right away, ordered our burgers and bliss soon followed. First of all, the burgers and cottage fries came in like 5 minutes, i never saw food served so quick!!! Now, the food itself... Excellent. I've never had a juicier burger. Each bite was pure tastiness. I will def be going back, Highly Recommended!!!
also refused service

This place could be a weekly, I'm too tired to cook habit except for the time I was quizzed on the way in about whether I was ordering dinner as well as a drink. I hadn't decided, and they said I couldn't sit at one of the several empty tables. This is a rude and pretty ludicrous way to treat customers.
Seen better days... the decor, among other things
By sglassNYC on 3/11/2012
As nearby neighbors, we've gone to this place many times over the years. Our observation is that the quality has gone downhill, and our neighbors don't seem to go much anymore. I wonder if their reputation helps them attract burger lovers and bar lovers from around the city and beyond. We recently went to try it again and were disappointed in the food and lack of service. The wait staff always seems grouchy and over-whelmed. If they had time to serve, breathe, or smile, I'd be more likely to go back.
I HATE this place
By FutureDentist on 3/4/2012
I came here with 4 friends at 1am..some of us wanting to eat some just for drinks. the place was relatively empty. We sat down the waiter took our order and when only 2 of us ordered food and the rest drinks they refused to serve us. I would be understanding if it had been a peak time for business but it was 1am!! They ha so many tables available! I think this is absurd and am completely disgusted with this kind of disservice. I have been eating there for about 2 years at this point. All I know is that neither I nor my friends will ever go back. Their burgers are nothing special and the pie they have they get from the little pie company. So I can definitely live without ever going there.
BEST BURGER IN TOWN, EVER!
By facosta67 on 10/31/2011
I've been having burger at JG Melon since Dec 1989. It was introduced me by my Father and I thank him for that. The enviroment, the furniture, the waiters, table towel and, of course, the best BURGER that I ever had in my life. Since than (1989), I have taken people there and they all are very impressed. My son and my wife simply love that place and we "HAVE" to go back there everytime we come back to the Big Apple. Also I've indicate JG for everyone I know and go to visit NY. Don't miss the opportunity to have the Best Burger, not only in town, but in the world!
Delicious Burger, Classic NYC Restaurant
By alexjaye on 4/11/2011
Don't mess with a classic NYC restaurant like JG Melon. It has great food, a cute theme, and a comfortable atmosphere. It is a restaurant full of regulars and it has been around forever - two huge reasons to at least give it a shot. The service is good and basic, the place is clean, and the burgers MELT IN YOUR MOUTH. The meat in the hamburger is so juicy and flavorful that you are finished before you can register what you just ate. After comparing it to Burger Joint and Corner Bistro, it definitely takes the cake for me. JG Melon's burger may not look like anything different or amazing, but close your eyes and take a bite and you will be in heaven. Enjoy!
Here's the deal ..... & ONLY facts

I have been a fan of Melon's for years. Anyone who says the burger flavour profile comes up short just doesn't know meat. As a genuine "foody" , a true culinarian, a devoted burger lover, and someone who has also been in many of the BEST meat packing facilities in the country I can say factually the burger meat here is as good as it gets. I also know the co.that supplies them their chopped meat and it has to be the way Melon's mgm't wants it or there's trouble. (and I have no vested interest or relationship with Melon's or their meat supplier). My ONLY interest is to clarify for those inadequately in the know about something as simple as damn good chopped meat. The decor and service are ok. It's about the burger, folks. Nothing else.
DMANBURGER "JG Melon"
By DMANBURGER on 4/30/2010
I watched the guys crammed in their small kitchen molding the patties by hand and searing them on a piping hot flat grill, whilst busy patrons waited to be seated. I was seated along the wall and immediately felt the anticipation building inside of me as I watched tasty little burgers pass me at eye level, the scent of seared meat and dill pickle fill the air, along with the sound of cottage fried potatoes frying in the background. The menu here is simple featuring hamburgers, cheeseburgers, salads and an excellent chili. I observed Upper Eastside yuppies and staunch melon loyalists, while my I waited for my burger. It arrived plump and juicy on a soft unseeded bun and was presented to me open faced and adorned with pickle chips and thinly sliced red onion. My first bite was a dynamic collage of flavor patched together with the crisp saltiness of the pickles, seared robustness of the meat and the freshness of the bun. The thing about this burger that makes it so good is its simplicity, just great meat and a great bun. Now the perfect accompaniment to this tasty treat is JG Melons signature cottage fries, crispy half-dollar size potato morsels fried to perfection and served in a bowl, delightful to the last one! To be honest, friends keep telling me, "You need to review a bad burger so your site will have balance". Well sorry to say that I disappointed my friends again, because this burger was fantastic!
Avoid Lunch at this Watering Hole!
By Gianettaswans0025 on 2/10/2010
Vaunted hamburger: Mediocre. My guest and I spent exactly one hour at this restaurant for a midweek lunch. The manager stood and glared at our table 9 times to get us to leave, beginning 10 minutes after we were served. I told him as we were leaving that an hour was not too long for lunch, and that his behavior was very rude. His response: this restaurant needs turnover; if you want to discuss business over lunch, go somewhere else. We will, and I suggest you do the same!
