Don't listen to the previous reviewer. I've been a food critic for 7 years, and this has consistently been one of my favorite spots in NYC for Chinese food. Joe's Ginger is NOT a rip-off of Joe's Shanghai. They are DIRECTLY related (as stated on their business cards) and have the same owner. Joe's Shanghai usually averages a wait time of 45 minutes to 1 hour, so they opened a second location right down the street to alleviate that. Also, the food is prepared by the same chef and tastes exactly the same as Joe's Shanghai. The only difference is that Joe's Ginger is actually much cleaner, has a nicer ambiance, and has better service. A must try.

What a horrible experience. We were seated easily as there were only two other tables full and now I see why. We were served water AFTER our food was brought and only because we had to ask for it. The waiter did not ask if we wanted rice, again, until after our food came then charged $1 for each little dish. The food was average at best, I ordered General Tsao's Chicken which was $12.95 and greatly overpriced for the amount received. The bad experience was topped off after we paid and the waiter boldly caught up with us as we were about to leave to ask for more of a tip.

I totally agree with Gopher9. The service is horrible at this restaurant and food is just ok. And yes, they charge you every single little thing, no free rice like it used to. All these waiters care is the tip in the end, not about providing you with good service. Also, customers beware when you get your bill. Make sure you check it before paying, because they rip customers off by adding one or two items that you didn't order or they add tips in your bill already without telling you. That's how they get their extra tips! I know this for a fact. No need to complaint to the owner because she is the who's doing it. In general, I won't recommend going back there at all! but if you do, good luck! Better off wait at Joe's Shanghai and get better food and service there.

Do not order the pork-stuffed steamed buns. It is the worst dish I've ever had. Soggy buns stuffed with warm brown water with a horrible smell. The rest of the food was barely ok and not that cheap for the quality. Not worth it!

I will begin by saying that the meal I had at Joe's Ginger was one of the most revolting things I have ever eaten. I counted myself lucky there were no later repercussions. I say this as someone who has eaten a great deal of Asian food and is a fairly adventurous eater. We visited China town in the hope of picking up some palatable Chinese fare. Joe's Ginger looked fairly solubrious, was Zagat rated and quite full. The lack of decor and brusque treatment from the serving staff we passed off as delightfully authentic. First, two noodle soups: writhing wormy mass topped with questionable sprinklings of pork matter. Then, two plates of dumplings- which looked like they had weathered and overcome many former attempts at mastication. The shrimp dumplings. On first taste, the toughness of the dough was nothing to the musty smell emanating from within the jaded-looking pouch. It took three dumplings before my stomach politely informed me that it would be best to desist. The pork-soup dumplings. From the moment I bit through the flaccid gray skin, and an oily slick, garnished with small congealed portions of pork fat, slid down my throat, I regretted it like I have never regretted any other culinary move I have ever made. That was before I got to the gristly little sucker lurking inside. All levity aside, the furry coating on my palate and feeling of nausea remained with me throughout the day, and haunted my dreams at night. Avoid like the plague.

After my meal at Joe's Ginger I was ready to abandon all future career plans and dedicate my life to ensuring no other unfortunate soul fell into the clutches of this gastronomic Gomorrah. Come rain or shine I was prepared to billet myself outside, placard in hand, warning all customers of their fate. Having resisted this temptation an internet diatribe seemed my only option. The food here was undoubtedly the worst I have ever eaten. My girlfriend and I ordered soup noodles (one pork, one seafood), both looked as though they had been dredged up from the Yangtze River several months previously. The shrimp dumplings that followed heralded their arrival with a pungent musky stench. These gray, odorous parcels contained the disembodied remains of the sorriest shrimps that I ever did see. My pork steamed buns, the restaurants supposed prize asset, had a particularly testicular quality. Once I had witnessed their greasy, fatty contents ooze over my plate my appetite fled, to some far flung corner of my being not to return for some time. Unfortunately the restaurant was my choice. Thanks to my girlfriend's merciful disposition we are still on speaking terms but it may be some time before we return to cordial relations. There is no medicinal herb in the rest of Chinatown that will allow me to forget this culinary debacle.

This place is just horrible with very poor service. The food had black coating spots which seems to be coming off a very very old frying pan or dirty frying pan. Food does not taste good and service is horrible. They insist to you (actually moved us after taking the seat) to sit on two person table while there were plenty of empty seats. Also, they do not take credit card. It is ridiculously expensvice for the quality of the food. Even Panda Express far exceeds this place. Finally they do not accept credit card so I had to walk two blocks to get cash. I am saving you from disappointment. I would never visit this place again. The person who gave 10 rating must be the owner or he has to quit food critic. I can bet my life that this place does not deserve 10 at ALL. I wish this could be a knock of Joes Shanghai at least knock off is somewhat similar....

I met a group of 7 friends at this place during a visit to NYC in February 2011 because Joe's Shanghai down the street was full. We got a table upstairs right away. But the service was erratic: some main dishes came a half hour after the others. And the food was the worst I have ever eaten at a Chinese restaurant anywhere on the planet, most of it drowned in thick sauces. The yellow fish I ordered was scrawny and skeletal, mostly scraps. A friend ordered a soup that she said tasted like warm dishwater. It was so disgusting that she returned it to the waiter. Not one of the eight of us liked the food. I had hoped for a pleasant reunion with friends but then felt very bad for having taken them to this dive. It left a bad taste in our mouths.

I was one of the 7 friends in 2/11 at Joe's Ginger and I agree that it was the worst Chinese food, wait, make that the worst food, I've ever had, with the sole exception of the spring roll, which for some reason escaped horribleness. My chicken and shrimp in plum sauce tasted sour, metallic and I was worried might give me food poisoning. It didn't, but the taste stayed in my mouth until late the next day. Awful. Additionally, the waiter refused to take a second entree order from me for a vegetarian dish so that I could have some veggies with the other dish, then he acted like I was substituting it for my original order, so I gave up on the idea altogether. Clearly some kind of weird con, since they end up making less money. Tea was never refilled, by the way, and while fairly weak, it was at least palatable. I have a little Chinese take out place near where I live that beats the heck out of Joe's Ginger.
