Soup Dumplings And Beyond

If you're looking for some Soup Dumplings, Joe's Shanghai will most likely be the restaurant to pop up at the top of the list. There are 3 locations, and I visited the one in Chinatown. Although they're best know for their Soup Dumplings, there's an extensive menu of dishes to choose from. The restaurant is very modest, with a no frills vibe, so don't expect anything swanky here. Yet, you'll find the restaurant always full of every type of person just looking for some good food. The tables are communal, so, be prepared to dine with others and have the opportunity to strike up some fun conversation with some strangers.  http://sprungonfood.com/2014/03/06/joes-shanghai

We went for an early dinner (before 5) at this restaurant because the one we were planning on going will not open till 5 and I was so hungry, I could not wait. To our surprise, the food is horrible beyond believe. With all fairness, their soup dumpling is good but that is the only thing that is good there. Maybe because it is holiday weekend, the place is quite busy even at early dinner time. It takes forever to get menu, it takes forever for food to come after we ordered. I was seated at the center walkway aisle side of a small table. The waiters coming and going bumped the back of my chair at least fifty times (no exaggeration). We ordered fried whole fish and fried pepper salt pork chop. Both dishes came out cold and soggy, not crispy at all. Oh decor, there is nothing to write home about. They use every inch of space to pack people in. One more thing, the price is higher than what is in the article above. We do not really care about the difference but our dinner was truly disgusting.

Made a reservation few days in advance. Called confirmed reservation. Writing this 30 min after my reservation was made for. Food is great but host is rude and too hungry to choke him. Can't stiff waiter bc they include gratuity on all bills even on parties of 2. Btw I have a party of ten. Definitely not coming back again.

I Dream of the Food at Joe's

Going to Joe's, you have to know certain things. You will wait. The decor is awful. The service (if you can call it that) is crazy. It's a long walk from the subway. But as soon as you take a bite from a juicy pork bun (soup dumpling), all of this triviality melts away. The food is amazing! I've tried several restaurants in Chinatown, but they all pale in comparison to Joe's Shanghai. My favorite dishes are the Szechuan string beans, which burst with salty flavor and contain a mystery vegetable that we think is pickled cabbage, Shanghai fried rice, chicken and corn soup and the Kung Pao chicken. The chili prawns are also delicious. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. Go, as soon as you can!!

Poor service and poor food quality

My wife and I went to Joes on the back of all the great reviews out there about this restruant. As we were not too hungry we tried to order an entree and a main to share. The waiter told us in an incredulous tone "Thats all!?" Feeling pressured, we ordered a fried rice as well. The entree arrived...pork dumplings. It was at best average. The pork filling was rather chewy and it had a strong pork after taste. The fried rice was terrible! We could only taste spring onions and raw seafood from the mix. Upon mentioning to the waiter about the terrible standard of the fried rice, the waiter gave us an annoyed look and told us a haughty tone "Well...different people have different taste." He was not even interested with why we thought it tasted terrible! My wife was half way explaining in an even tone when the waiter rudely walked off. Overall very poor service and poor food quality.

The crab dumplings are delicious and some people make a meal out of them. The simply prepared vegetables are good and actually I find the food here to be quite good compared to the rest of Chinatown. I haven't really tried stuff like lo mein, chow mein, fried rice, or beef and broccoli but they look good enough. If you want service after you ordered your meal, you will most likely need to wave for it though it's not a big problem for me. And be prepared to share a table. The decor is quite plain. However I like the aquarium filled with koi (?).

crabmeat pork soup dumplings are the way to go. Bite into the dumplings to indulge in a very juicy tasty broth. Lousy service & attitude but worth the trip. Weekend brunch hours are a longer wait.

I have been here so many times & their crabmeat dumplings are unbelievable. I have brought so many people to this place & everyone loves the crab or pork dumplings. One set of the dumplings is enough for lunch. Service sucks though. Most of the waiters are rude & are unattentive.
