Pork Hock is Divine

Went last night for my fiance's birthday and all I can say is that I would eat the pork hock every day of my life if I could. The hash brown was equally perfect. We got a table in the back, which was great since it's a little quieter and we could hold a conversation -- but we were right next to the hot kitchen and I was sweating all night. Our food and friendly service made up for it though. Can't wait to go back.

Small and noisy space but real good food, kitchen open late, great atmosphere.

Small, quaint and cozy with a west village vibe that makes you feel like you are part of some sort of private club that's the best kept secret in town. The ham and cheese is tops and I love the bloody (which comes with a gratuitous small beer chaser). You'll also see the occasional celebrity and Alex at the bar is a great person to sit down with and talk (sports, women, art...all that) ... the place is just dope. Not cheap but worth it...I plan around when I can get down there and very much look forward to it. P.S. Don't sleep on the food, yes the ambience is great but the food itself is arguably better!

Stopped here on a whim. Thank goodness we did as otherwise we would have ended up in some overrated, over priced place instead of here at this dimly lit, down to earth place! We ordered the Pork Hock and I suggest you do the same! The stuffing was heaven to my palate. We shared this meal and it was plenty for us both and they didn't even charge us a sharing fee. Go figure- they are reasonable and know how to run a business! Great signature cocktails (Sidecar was perfect) and music make it a must go to place for a date or after work to unwind!

Joesph Leonard recently suffered a fire in the kitchen. No one was hurt, but their restaurant is now undergoing renovations and is closed until further notice. Which sucks because the food is excellent.

Stumbled on JL while visiting NYC. What a nice surprise! Good food, good wine, good times. A true neighborhood feel to the place. We went back 1 more time before heading back to SF. Bartender remembered us, asked how our trip was going, recommended a few other spots to try. Wow! what a wonderful ambassador for the Village. We will definitely recommend to our friends planning a visit to NYC.

3 visits now, all good experiences. The Good: East coast oysters always $1.50 each, how do you beat that? Great bloody with a beer chaser, where else do you see that? Frisee and lardons VERY tasty, albeit a bit small for my liking. Braised pork, stuffed rabbit, chicken special, baked cod, grits, liked 'em all. Excellent service on each visit, zero complaints there. The Bad: Brownie dessert is a bit pedestrian, looks like it came from the grocery store bakery. Wine list is nothing to brag about and they don't have a corkage policy, that should be addressed (even the very best offer a corkage option Gabe). Quarters are tight so if you need a lot of elbow room it's not the place for you. Bottom Line: Easily jumps into my top-6 and I'll be going back regularly.

...especially when it's layered over with yummy pork fat. I sat at the bar, at a spot pointed out to me by the manager as his favorite, as you can oversee the entire restaurant. He was right. Everyone was friendly and helpful, including the two bartenders. The appetizer I had -- bone marrow -- was good, but not as good as the one at Double Crown. But the fried pork knuckle was a home run on every level you care to name. Better than the crackling pork shank at Maloney & Porcelli. My dessert special was nothing to write home about, but astonishingly one of the bartenders wanted to know how it could have been better when I told him I didn't care for it. A VERY warm, appealing place, despite the noise level, one I look forward to going back to again.

Gabe gets it right at Joseph Leonard, a friendly, popular, neighborhood joint with great food. The brandade is a delicious opener, the oysters are great, the bass is wonderful and orginal, the specials always interesting and tasty. The look and feel of the place is picture perfect: comfortable, warm, inviting. It's crowded but has a happy vibe and helpful friendly staff, hip but still friendly. Add a good if small wine list, the fact that they're open for breakfast, and you have a wonderful neighborhood spot in what everyone thought was a doomed resto location.
