This place has gone downhill ever since they hired that PR guy. Catering now to the lux transient people that comes to the EV. Most of the reviews at Yelp are bs and been bought by the insecure and condescending PR guy. Jules used to be a classic, quaint Classic French Bistro after ~18yrs at same spot in the East Village: cozy, homey, low-key, not sceney or loungey (esp. with the transformation of the EV in the past few years). But now the PR shrimp has been attracting only the latter and marginalizing those that made this place stand the test of gentrification time. No full liquor license, therefore, they really jacked up the price on those wine. ($10/glass the cheapest and it's not even fine wine). They also raised the price on most of their food items, such as escargot, which is now $14 up from $8. Not because the rent went up (they own the first three floors of the building) they just want to squeeze every penny from their clienteles. Basically now catering to the tourists, naifs, and moneyed transients. Trying to be Pastis and Lafayette, and those two places are tourist traps and inauthentic French food. See the filtered Yelp reviews if you really want to know the dish on this place. There are plenty of great bistros in NYC old and new that are far more affordable, without the bs, and the pretense. Lucien and 26 Seats (old), and Le Philosophe and Mominette (new) are examples.

(continued) We were basically ignored by the waitress the entire time and whenever I tried to make eye contact to bring the calamari (and the missing pineapple juice) to her attention, she looked at our table quickly and ran away (or to the attention of our loud, annoying neighboring table. We skipped on dessert, as we didn't want to end up staying there for an hour waiting for her to bring it. It took us at least 15-20 minutes to get the check. And by then all we wanted to do was leave.

This was also after a neighboring table's beers were brought to them (this table arrived at least 15 minutes after us). It's apparent how larger tables are treated far better than tables of two. We ordered two appetizers, one was a special which was very good. It was a goat cheese pastry with thinly sliced potatoes on top next to a side of salad. The grilled calamari was absolutely awful. My boyfriend refused to touch it based on looks alone. I tried the calamari and it was as bad as it looked-- much too chewy as it was thicker than any calamari I have every seen. And it was sitting in a pot of garlic and oil- not the grilled calamari I expected. The main courses were decent/good. I had the sea scallops with risotto (not the best risotto I've had, but alright) and my boyfriend had the veal with gorgonzola gnocchi. He seemed to think the veal was alright (albeit a very small portion) but the gnocchi was drowned in an unpleasant sauce.

I heard about Jules from nymag but only checked the yelp reviews before going. The menu looked appetizing but the service was beyond terrible. And usually I would be skeptical of reading such harsh reviews (such as those involving customers being chased by waiters for an additional tip) but with Jules I completely believe them! The evening started alright with the host asking if we had reservations (we didn't) but were promptly shown to our table. It was in the back but we didn't mind because the jazz music was actually very loud and the people seated were talking just as loud in order to hear each other over the music. The host actually ran to our table with us struggling to keep up because of the crowd standing between tables. The menu was standard French bistro and the prices were moderate. The waitress took our drink and appetizer orders but my pineapple juice took about 25-30 minutes to come.
Terrible Service - Average Food

This restaurant was characterised by poor food and terrible service. The food that I received was cold when it arrived, as was the coffee of one of my companions. Although the jazz music is pleasant as a background, insult was added to injury at the end of our meal as the band went round to each table and commanded that each person on the table give generously. This made all of us dining feel extremely uncomfortable - as he wouldn't leave until we had parted with money. Overall - this was a poor experience and I wouldn't recommend going here!
Great for brunch

My two friends and I came across this place after the restaurant we were intending to go to was closed. We walked in because the setting looked really cute and they were still serving brunch even at 3:30pm on a Saturday. There was a live jazz band playing (perhaps just a tad too loud... and I agree with the other reviewer, it was kind of awkward for them to go around asking for tips) and we got a great booth by the window. I had the french toast with fruit which was delicious, and my friends got the eggs benedict and the steak and eggs, both of which were really tasty (the eggs were cooked perfectly!). Our waiter was very nice and polite (and cute!). We will definitely be coming back here again!

Food was quite good and setting is nice but the service was absolutely awful. We will never go back. And they added a ridiculous tip on which they said we couldnt remove since we ordered after 11pm and yet the service was so bad. Left such a badtaste in our mouth... will never be back.

I'm suprised reading about the bad experiences here...I haven't had a problem (yet), although did have a rude waitress once, but I just thought she was having a bad day...The food is good, love the live music, its cozy and nice...it's not for large parties, it's a great place to take a date...everyone should try this place at least once and hopefully have a great time as I always do...

ambient-ok. food- I wouldn't call this kind of food- fine French bistro, could summarize it as- NOTHING SPECIAL. service- worse I have been in NYC, I dine in the city a lot and the service in the nastiest deli in the city is better then this place. I always give at least 18% tip but after sharing a bottle of wine I gave by mistake a 20% tip over the total but not including the tax (the grand total was written below and I didn't notice it). we left the place and the waitress that was rude during the whole evening chased us and was demanding an extra tip. So embracing... BEWARE- this is a RESTAURANT OF BEGGARS, I just prefer donating beggars money on the subway and not when I go dining.
An embarassement to France, never ever ever again

We gave them over 10 % of the tip and we were attacked by 2 waiters. They came back to us, insulting and embarrasing us in front of all other customers, in front of the whole restaurant. And why? Because there seams to be an unwritten law at this place to pay a 15 % tip. If only they had communicated this in a friendly an professional way. Maybe writing it on the menu could be helpful. We gave them a 12 dollar tip, and they demanded 5 dollars more. We gave them the extra 5 dollars, even though they did not deserve it, and they shouted at us to never come back again. This may sound like a bad movie, but it is reality. One thing is for sure, we will never come back, but we hope that things like this will never happen to you. It is not a good feeling to be treated like dirty thieves after paying 125 dollars including more then 10% tip for a delicious meal and get chased from the restaurant. But never mind, there are more then 40 other French restaurants in New York City with well behaved, civilized, and welcoming waiters.
