You can actually hear your date talk

It is very hard to find a restaurant on the UES where you can actually hear your guests. Carriage house is an oasis . And it isn't overpriced, either. The decor is old world, Irish country antique. Both dining rooms are charming - downstairs is a little less formal, upstairs is a little more Downton Abbey, but the noise level in both is low, the music is well-chosen (Billy Holiday and such), and the service is friendly and attentive. Kings has become one of my favorite UES restaurants. We've enjoyed nearly everything on the menu, but the quail with prosciutto and the chopped salad are my favorite appetizers. The lamb is perfectly cooked, and the filet mignon is outstanding (I ask for the sauce on the side). I've enjoyed salmon, and the duck is also excellent. The dessert menu will satisfy anybody's sweet tooth, particularly the blackberry crumble and the chocolate ganache (my favorite). This is not a neighborhood where you find many wine lists with good value, or even very thoughtful selection, but Kings Carriage clearly chooses their wines with care. The French options are exceptionally good value, but I've let the owner, Paul, guide me in other directions and been delighted with both the matches and the value. And yes, you really should order tea, if only to enjoy the teapots. If you want to impress someone with your taste, and let them know that you really do want to talk and listen, you won't find a more refined, romantic setting on the UES. Highly recommended.

I recently went to this place for lunch. The more time passed, the more apparent the horrors of this place became. What may have looked like a charming interior at a very superficial first glance turned out to be a musty and neglected back room, complete with horrific curtains, pointless pictures of English gentlemen, and the occasional deceased light bulb. A 20 year old air conditioner provided the soundtrack for this extremely disappointing lunch. To make things worse, the food turned out to be on pretty much the same level. The "roasted duck" was served on a nightmarish turret of mashed carrots and dried up spinach, previously frozen no doubt, with a side of something suspiciously close to barbecue sauce. The omelette was average at best. Needless to say, it was hopelessly overpriced. I'm sure the same quality of food can be found at any university dining hall for one third of the price.
