Awful Food, Awful Attitude

The place may specialize in comfort food, but they do things their own way; and if you don't like it, that's your problem. The people at Kitchenette surely do not subscribe to the theory that the customer is always right. Menu items often do not fit the descriptions, but don't take issue with it, because if you complain their response will simply be "that's how we do it here." C'mon Kitchenette, it's not like you have Thomas Keller in the kitchen putting his spin on things. Make the food the way the diner expects it. Oh--and it's overpriced.

I went there today with my boyfriend and this is the first time that I've ever written a review, bu this particular experience just made me write one. I've been to Kitchenette before in 2005, but I went to the one uptown, and my friends and I would consistently go for breakfast and it was a favorite of ours. Since I'm not uptown anymore, I've stopped going and 6 years later, today, I went feeling a bit nostalgic and unfortunately to the downtown branch. Well, I was quite embarassed to have brought my boyfriend here given that I had ranted about how great it was. Food: I had a Huevos Rancheros and 1) the corn tortillas were straight from a bag, not heated, toasted, or warmed 2) the beans looked like they came straight out of a can or my cafeteria grade school lunch, 3) the salsa/pico de gallo on top was BROWN- aren't tomatos red? It did not look fresh, and neither did it taste fresh. THE SERVICE WAS pretty horrible. The whole staff was hanging out and socializing with eachother, and counting their money on a table, cooks/waiters/hosts-- all were eating their lunch/dinner amongst customers, such as tables next to them. My waitress was eating her lunch right across from me, so when I wanted water, she was too involved with her lunch or counting her trip. She even forgot to log the mac and cheese in the computer so we had to cancel our order because it didn't come out when we were hungry.

I love breakfast foods but was so disappointed with their pancakes. The cherry pie was the worst part- totally inedible. I don't know what all the fuss is about but they don't live up to the hype. All the desserts are sub par

Cupcakes and treats.

I'm constantly on the search for the great treats--excellent brownies, cupcakes, cookies, and cakes. Its a small hobby that I really enjoy. On one of my random walks I came across Kitchenette. It had a very inviting atmosphere from the outside and had a nice decor inside. But I was proved wrong unfortunately. I stood by the counter for a few minutes without being helped. Instead the waiter said excuse me so he could move past me. When I finally received help, I asked questions about what kind of cakes and cupcakes there were. I ended up picking up 2 random ones: 2 yellow caked cupcakes, one with just icing, and the other cream filled. After my purchase, I did not receive a thank you or anything along those lines. The cupcakes were decent, the selection looked good, but the service is lacking. It seems since I didn't have kids latched on, I was not treated as nicely as the others that were in. Disappointing! Good food is only as great as it's service. I guess the search continues..

Reminds me of Hansel and Gretel

This place reminds me of the story Hansel and Gretel because the food is fairly good (if overpriced) but the owner is like the old lady in the story--bring your kids in and she snarls at them. She was just plain rude to my kids, telling them to get out of her way! Frankly who cares about the food when the experience is such that your kids are afraid to go back? The kids are now calling it "Bitchenette!"

Where is the old Kitchenette?

In a recent winter time in NYC we decide to order couple times from Kitchenette, our favorite place from the time we live in Tribeca from 1999 to 2004. But what happen? The restaurant not only moved from his original spot on WBroadway ,but seems like everything is changed. Most their signature dishs, like the Lemon Chicken, is less than a half in size that used to be, the cakes (we try 4) are dry and tasted old every single time and even the service and the staff looks to be change to worst. Where is that nice girl who used to take our orders from the phone every night? Where is that amazing brazilian guy who from about 5 years “always” delivery our food hot and perfect? Where is the old Kitchenette? We realy miss that place...

I'd heard great things about Kitchenette, but when my husband and I went there for breakfast a couple weeks ago, it was a huge let down. I ordered a waffle, and it was practically inedible. I didn't even eat a quarter of it, just ate the fruit off the top. Fortunately, I wasn't that hungry. My husband said his omelet was good, but the biscuit wasn't, and the peanut butter cookie we bought for a snack later was fine, but the waffle was soooo bad that I will never go back. Maybe the intern messed up the batter or someone was having a bad day, but they should be ashamed of the food they served me.

My kids miss the funny lady . Things just aren't the same. We will not be doing our birthday party there this year! The guy that's there does not like kids..This used to be a real kid friendly place. Food was good but not worth the attitude or the price.

"Wonderful place. Fresh eggs, bacon and baked goods originate in a small kitchen to the side. Pies and cakes near the fron get your mouth watering. Charming seating area. Good coffee." That was my original review. Lately, though, I've started to take my breakfasts at Square Diner (same neighborhood, up a couple blocks). While S/D's coffee is inferior, their French Toast and sausage are far, far superior of late, and the value can't be beat. My expectations of Kitchenette run pretty high, almost as high as their prices. The grapefruit juice alone would bankrupt a single mother. My last meal there, a breakfast of french toast with strawberries, bacon, and the aforementioned juice, ran close to $20 with tip! Apart from the cost, the french toast was flat-out DREARY!! -- a bit flattened, not glistening with just-made freshness. I don't even recall it being that hot. The bacon was whatever, inferior to the stuff at Good Enough to Eat uptown. And of course, there was the jeweler's choice juice. I don't know if it's still worth it.

Living uptown, its hard to find a great brunch place. So when I went to kitchenette the first time, i really enjoyed it, but it was a slow day. I've been back on Sunday and let me tell you it can be a nightmare. 1) not all the tables are made to be eaten at so if you get a bad one youÂ’re screwed. 2) They fill that place up to the max and its surely a fire hazard and it makes eating a lil odd when you are seated closely to strangers. Lastly, the waiter takes your order and you often donÂ’t see him until your bill. That is my biggest pet peve! So much like the ppl above the service is def lacking, not in manners but in presence. If they could fix that, it would help! I get that they want to make as much money as possible in this economy, but squishing us all in there isnÂ’t a good thing. Take it for what its worth. i do love the sausage!
