Lower your expectations...

My boyfriend and I have been big fans, and supporters of David Chang's restaurants for years. We were particularly excited to try Ko after several attempts at making a reservation. The food was amazing! It was by far one of the most creative meals we have ever eaten. The micro-planed fois gras was the most notable ingredient from the ten courses. We also recommend the alcohol pairing. It was well worth it! With that said the service is a huge disappointment. We would never go back. The staff is completely pretentious, and made the experience miserable. It was actually uncomfortable to sit across from the chef that served us. He mumbled through the descriptions of each course, and acted bothered by any questions. There are only ten people in the whole restaurant, and I would be willing to bet the large majority of their customers have a very strong appreciation for food. There is no reason for them to act so bothered/conceited. From reading the reviews it sounds like this is the overall mood of Ko. The place would be perfect if they could lose the attitude...
Great food + abysmal service

The food here was, indeed, remarkable. The service, however, was apathetic to the point of offense. Two of the three chefs seemed put upon to actually have to _serve_ their guests, and none of the staff showed any interest in dealing with a particularly loud guest who seemed intent on destroying the atmosphere for everyone. When I expressed my dissatisfaction afterward, the staff's reaction was "really?!" That one might have a bad experience in David Chang's empire--and as a result of their professional negligence--was clearly unfathomable for them. The attitude seemed to be that, if you have a bad time, then you're problem. If you want to go, go SOLELY for the food and focus EXCLUSIVELY on it. Everything else about the place will just take away from the food.

Started well let down by service

The evening started great and the initial courses were divine. Whilst the later dishes were not to my taste my husband loved it all. The service however was a big disappoinment. Having experienced fantastic service in every other NY restaurant we went to during our 4 day trip I couldn't believe the rudeness and arrogance of our waiter. Having spent over $500 for dinner I would have expected nothing to have been too much trouble however asking for a serviette seemed to throw him over the edge. The whole food and drink combination was quite an experience but the front of house element with the too cool for school attitude is a little bit dated and not quite as forward thinking as the food element.

Every course had me anxiously waiting for the next. The flavors of the food are intense. The biscuit was like nothing else I've tried, and the lamb was fantastic. Yum yum yum. Would go more often if I could get a reservation and if it were a bit cheaper. But worth it! The atmosphere is laid back with the simple wooden decor a bit intimate with the chefs right in front of you. Also, it was fairly quiet - I barely noticed the other diners around us.

While you would think that a restaurant so impossible to get a seat would be pretentious and stuck-up, everything about the feel of ko is modest. That is until you take the first bite of the buttery black pepper biscuit and begin your culinary trip. The lowkey feel of dining at the bar served by the chefs in front of you makes the experience even more delightful. Each dish was created for you right then and there, and the chefs even impress themselves with the bold, unique creations they set in front of you. Ko course-for-course kept me wanting more. Highlights were the savory biscuit to start, the oxtail broth soup, ravioli with a chipotle southwest flavor, all the way down to the animal cracker ice cream, and finale of blueberry crumble with olive oil ice cream. While the reservation system is a pain, it makes the dining experience cozy and intimate, and so worth the wait. And for the fantastic experience the $100 prixe-fixe is quite reasonable. Bon appetit!
