I am sad to see La Goulue go. Pretty as she is, her owner must have been strangled by his landlord until his eyes bulged, because look at those prices! Insupportable, menu speak for Big, Whopping, Unbearable. Service there was never really bad, but if I were confronted by some of the galling things cited by other writers here, I would have stormed out. It seems like the behavior of servers - classic French especially, who are seeing their income plummet, and blaming the poor, hapless customers they get. As to the food, I stuck with sauteed fresh fish and some good white wine. Never a bad choice.

My 70-year-old Mom was visiting from the Midwest and I brought her to La Goulue for lunch while shopping for a wedding dress. I had eaten there after trips to Barneys and thought she would love it. We were seated and when we tried to order a light lunch of appetizers and soups, they insisted that we order an entree a piece. We explained that we did not want that much food and they insisted that we LEAVE. I honestly could not believe it. The server was embarrassed, but said it was policy. We prepared to go and the manager, who could not have been more callous or arrogant, held us there (literally would not let us leave) until we paid for the large bottle of sparkling water we had not had a moment to even sip. The greedy policy at La Goulue and the horrendous behavior of the manager made me embarrassed for my city and mortified for my poor Mom who was treated with unbelievable rudeness. When closing the door on us, a woman said, in punctuation, We have been here for more than 30 years. How that happened is a profound mystery to me.

La Goulue looks like a cosy parisian bistro and serves the adequate simple french dishes, pretty good but overpriced "a la carte" (I guess that the wealthy Upper East Side regular customer doesnt care so much). Go there for the brunch, it is a good value for money (37$)! Efficient service.

Have only been there for lunch, and do enjoy the experience. We always have the cheese souffle and a glass (or two) of vino! Unfortunately, the souffle is only available Monday- Friday. If you are hungry, the large seving is doable. If you want a starter, do share the puffy concoction with your companion. The tables are very close together, and it is noisy. We like people-watching while enjoying a leisurely meal in this posh shopping neighborhood

If you're looking for a place with beautiful decor with an authentic Parisian feel, great people watching & celeb spotting (Anne Hathaway, Sharon Stone & Ralph Lauren the other night), solid (though unexceptional) bistro fare, and attentive service, then La Goulue is the restaurant for you. A perennial favorite Madison Ave classic, though mildly Eurotrash... Go for Sunday brunch, come back from the great desserts... I've always had a wonderful dining experience here and feel that other reviews are being unfair and biased.

Judging from the other reviews here of La Goulue I get the feeling that these people have a major chip of their shoulders from the moment they walk in the door. I have always been treated with the utmost courtesy and charm. The food is good--not fabulous, but that's ok. You're having a meal on Madison Avenue--it's going to be expensive--deal with it! I've never had a bad meal here and I've NEVER had bad service. Many people who find attitude, go in with their own attitude and baggage. That's why they should stay in the malls.

I have been a handful of times, and the service has gotten repeatedly worse. I booked a resv. for my husband's birthday, and requested a nice table, and they sat us in the bar area and gave us terrible service full of attitute. Nonetheless, I was very embarrased.
