We went out for my friend's birthday dinner Saturday night and saw 2 or 3 other birthday dinners there, sweetened by the restaurant bringing trays of champagne flutes for the whole table. Everyone was happy with what they ordered (we loved the empanada with rice pudding and espresso ice cream we ordered for birthday dessert) and the sangria was delicious. I was super happy with the prices and portion sizes, especially compared with La Rosa Mexicana where everything seems ridiculously small and overpriced. The only downfall was that the restaurant, super busy, didn't seat us until 45 minutes after our reservation time.

I ate at La Palapa last night and I had probably the best service ive ever had, my waitress was so knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations. I think the trick at La Palapa is to share dishes, the fried plantanes were ridiculously good and the main dish we had was pork and was also really great. i coud have used more on the margarita side but you cant win them all. I would definitely go back

$5 for a tiny taco that is dry and tasteless? This is truly a sad example of overly hyped east village dining.
Not only are the prices inexcusable for Mexican food, but it is horrible food on top of that. This restaurant makes taco bell seem like cuisine. It was almost infuriating. Compared to a previous dining experience here over a year ago, I'd say they've since raised the prices and started cutting some culinary corners-it was not nearly this bad back then.
Sure, the garden is nice and the service was standard, but never would I recommend this place. Ever.

We trust reviewers for reliable suggestions in choosing new restaurants. Unfortunately, my experience at Palapa was so far from multiple reviewers that I had to speak up. The good: Palapa has a relaxing decor suitable for an after-work cocktail. The bad: The food, unfortunately. I have never experienced such dry and tasteless chicken like the one used to stuff my enchiladas. The tamal appetizer was a mush of irreconcilable flavors. The steak was simply passable. I had low expectations and was mercilessly disappointed. The Ugly: The service. I'm certain the waiter forgot about us after taking our order. I regretted not being able to tip his substitute, the busboy.

We went on a saturday night without any reservations. Though it was crowded, the hostess got us seated quickly which was great! I loved their passion fruit margaritas! The food was a little on the salty and dry side. But the drinks and the service made up for it! Reservations recommended

Sorry, couldnt think of a great subject for this review. In anycase, the food is pretty damn good. Loved the flavors and the meat was juicy. They did fresh guac, but it needed a little more salt. Overall, good food, fun decor, and solid service.

Great food, good service, beautiful back garden, but a little pricey for Mexican.

The food was terrific but when we received the bill I almost had a heart attack. 12 dollars for a shot of tequila. The drinks were very expensive. The waiters brought chips and guacamole to the table that we didn't even order which came to a whopping 27 dollars. I would visit again but would be more vigilant about what was ordered and the costs of drinks. The servers were highly attentive but I think it was to sell as much and as fast as they could.

Given the paucity of good Mexican restaurants in NYC, this is a place we enjoy and return to. I always start with a margarita (they often have fruit flavored, but I'm with the original), which they do wonderfully. Decent chips with an assortment of dips, but the guacamole could use more flavor.
Main courses are erratic but I'm always happy with the steak, either the one on the menu or the special. For a change, I'll get the quesadillas, which can be cheese, chicken or beef.
Dinner runs about $30 with one drink.
