I've been coming here for years and always enjoyed it. Admittedly, I've had the occasional meal that didn't measure up, but overall it s a great value, good food, and fun atmosphere. Part of the charm is that it is entirely run by a changing crew of French people here for short or long stays. Chat up the bartender and he might share a Calvodos with you. Chic? Not really. Solid and a good value? Absolutely.

Pere Pinard was recommended by our guide book, and, although the place was almost empty (maybe all those bad reviews are working) we still went. The daily starter (a lentil pate with merguez sausage) was one of the best dishes I have ever eaten, and after a 3 week diet of dreary american food, rekindled my interest in food again! All four of us agreed that the food was really superb... The wine was ok - maybe a little expensive, but no more so than the usual outrageous restaurant mark up. Yes, the service was authentically French - standoffish and slightly aloof - but as an Englishman I'm used to that from the French. Maybe you New Yorkers need to calm down a little!

Not sure why people stated the service was bad in earlier posts. I've been trying to go here a couple times but the wait was always too long. But when actually making reservations I was seated in no time and service was quite prompt.

I was there with friends : we had a reservation at 9.30 and only found a table at 10.15 without any apologies from the staff. I pretty hate places were you have to wait in spite of a reservation without being given even a seat or a drink. Especially when you have to shout to chat as it is here. However, the crowd was unpretentious, rather convivial and fun. Some were loud, some were singing and this gave a pretty nmice feeling to the place. The wine was expensive given its quality and food was OK overall but not mindblowing. Honestly, this would be cool if there wasn't the wait, but it definitely does not deserve a 1 hour wait.

If you enjoy food then this is the place. If you value service, then watch out. Right out rude, may ask you to leave after you're eating because someone needs your table may ask you to pay cash only although they promise they take AMEX If trying to get the before 7 prix fix and you ordered by 6:50, may tell you you arrived and ordered after 7 May add a 20% gratuity on your check, as they did to our table of 3 without your consent

everytime i have been to le pere pinard i have had a terrific experience. the restaurant is my favorite bistro in the city. the price is great and the food tasty. the steak tartare is delicious and is prepared to your liking right at the table. the house specialty cocktail with mint and champagne is a treat. it can be crowed on the weekend especially later in the evening. the outdoor garden is beautiful in the summer.

Cooler-than-thou servers, europop played at jet engine volume, and tricky pricing...what's not to like? At least the shepherds pie isn't bad...if you can stomach the wait staff's attitude.
