Fantastic Find on Avenue B

Whether it’s girl’s night out or a romantic date, Le Souk is a great place to eat, drink and be very merry! The East Village space is very hip, complete with many different rooms to eat and drink in. The music makes you want to get up and dance, but don’t, unless you’re prepared to shake it with the belly dancers! If weather permits, make a reservation and ask to sit in the outdoor garden. If you are going with a very large group (over 10) make every effort to share the round couch area in the back garden. The fluffy white pillows make it a very comfortable place to lounge after indulging in the African/Moroccan Cuisine. The food is reasonable and delicious. If you are into sharing, get a bunch of appetizers. Try the Meze plate and the Vegetable Cigars. The seafood tagine and the Couscous are fabulous-get a few and share them. The Sangria is a little overpriced ($45 a pitcher), but worth every last sip. The staff is very accommodating and very willing to help you with your selections. After your belly is full get a peach hookah, sit back and enjoy the Moroccan atmosphere.

Has that critic BEEN on Avenue B lately? It's awful. For this reason I would never go here for business or a first date, only with people I know well enough to drag into the 'hood. Once inside though, you'll forget all that. Le Souk may be tiny but is a unique, indulgent experience. It's very cool place, all Casablanca-y, with romantic lanterns and candles everywhere. Service is casual and so is the dress. We were served excellent seafood and lamb for about $15 a plate, perfectly seasoned and cooked to a turn. It's obvious a foodie is behind the line...they take pride in what they put out and it shows! Between courses we lounged on pillows and drank passionfruit martinis. I'm only half kidding when I say they're lucky I'm not still there. In my humble opinion, a super bargain for the quality of the food and a beautiful atmosphere to lose yourself in. I had seen previous posts saying the food was inauthentic but that's just not true. If the neighborhood doesn't scare you off- GO! I doubt you will be disappointed.

If you want good middle eastern food, Le Souk is no longer the place to go. I don't know what happened, but when CANNED OLIVES (the black, sliced kind) show up on a plate on a middle eastern restaurant, that is your sign to get up and head for the door. I asked for real olives and guess what? there weren't any! My "skewers of lamb and chicken" weren't skewers at all - they were grilled lamb patty and a grilled breast of chicken. And the vegetable couscous? A hunk of plain couscous with some gigantic carrots plopped on top. Shame on you, Le Souk, for serving this crap and letting unwitting customers believe it's how it's REALLY DONE. I made some calls after this awful experience and heard a rumor that the morrocan chef had left. Regardless, I won't be back anytime soon. For a better experience try Moustache or Mamlouk - not Moroccan but a million times better.

Discriminatory staff

Read the 80+ other negative reviews of Le Souk on Citysearch for reasons not to eat there. My experience--Men beware: the bouncer would not let me join my friends inside because there were "already too many women." The female manager responded to my complaint by advising me to "bring a woman" next time I want to get in. How does a public restaurant get away with discriminating based on gender? In case this doesn't bother you enough not to go, the food is lousy and overpriced, and the service is slow and terrible.

Three reasons not to go back to Le Souk - cockroach in water glass; hunk of undefined fish in my vegetable tagine (I'm a vegetarian and cared enough to ask whether it was vegetarian before I ordered); and finally despite the long and painful wait for the insipid food and the above-mentioned mishaps Le Souk didn't offer any sort of apology. Also, the 12% tip I left was not to the waitress's liking so she berated me loudly, telling me that the management doesn't pay at all, and that she subsists on her tips alone. I'd never patronize that place again. Oh, and the bathrooms are indescribably foul.

I have been to le souk a couple of times and each time has been trying or downright miserable. Getting in is the first of all ordeals at this place. The bouncers are rude (and aggressive) and so are all the service staff who seem to think that people ought to be treated like dirt. The food sucks and they missed a couple of courses that we ordered and hurried us out. I hope this message gets out - noone should have to pay lots of money to be treated badly in this city. They are plenty of other places to go to.

I made reservations for five a week in advance, called three days later to confirm and they also called me to confirm. Never in these three points of contact was I told there was a NON-OPTIONAL PRI FIX FOR EVERY MEMBER OF THE PARTY THAT COST $32-42 PER PERSON, which we only found out after we ordered drinks and had gotten settled. We told the manager that we were unaware of this and how one of us had come there before and not had this problem. She said it was non negotiable -we couldn't even just get four of these four course dinners -we had to each get one. We stayed against better judgment. There are many other parts to this story –a waitress accosting me to give her a good tip (can you believe this!), airplane like food, people licking each other on the restaurants indoor bed six inches from my face (literally). In the restaurants defense, I think this would be a fun place to go LATER in the evening for the loud booming music they play, décor, and the fact that you won’t have to interact with most of the HORRIBLY RUDE STAFF & expensive/iffy food.

We took some visiting friends here for a night out and they loved it. Great ambience and exotic music is accentuated by a absolutely stunning belly dancer! Its also the only place I've ever seen a male belly dancer (not as stunning), which was interesting. Later the place turns into a multi room club, so no need to go elsewhere after dinner which is a huge plus. Good food is NOT the reason you go to le souk (If they're only offering the fixed menue make sure you choose the more expensive option). But if you're looking for a good night out, its a great option.

If there was an equivalent of the Rasberry awards for restaurants, le Souk would win the grand prize with a landslide. Expect one thing when you go to Le Souk for dinner: the worst service in town and horrible food. What a shame this place still exists! It gives Moroccan food bad rep! That is too bad because the decor is quite nice. The waitress was beyond rude to our party. After tiping her 10% (which was already too much considering the MISERABLE service with the worst attitude), she chased us down the street to ask for more! I am French (and so was she) and she probably thought I was a tourist. She told me that in NY, it is mandatory to leave a 20% tip at LEAST! People like that gives the French bad rep!

We went with a large group of people, with reservations. They sat us two feet from the almost exploding speakers, the waiter was drunk and rude, they made us choose from only one side of the prix fix menu(there were two columns one semi-veggie)so everybody had to eat the same thing. The food took forever, and when it finally came, they brought three large bowls one with a handful of chops, the other two or three pieces of chicken, and another with a couple of weird unidentified small fish full of spines. This was supposedly for 15 people!! half the people didn't even get to eat!! We complained to the waiter who basically told us to suck it up, at last we went to the manager who agreed to refund a small amount of money. it was flat out robbery!!
