Bad Food, Bad Service, Questionable Business Practice by Ebert We went to Lokal on a Sunday night when there were very few patrons, us and one other couple. Interestingly enough 5 Leaves next door was overflowing and had at least a 30-45 minute wait. Lokal's food was uneven, some warm, some tepid.. the hummus appetizer was stale as was the bread for the table. Worst of all, when the bill came we found 20% had been added to our bill as a "tip" because we had been joined by two friends. When questioned I was told it's the restaurant's policy for a party of 6 or more. I asked if it was stated on the menu and told it was although it must have been pretty small print because I couldn't find it. On top of this our light- handed waited tried to skim some more from our bill by giving us incorrect change. When questioned, he said that they don't deal in small change and rounded up to the next dollar. This place is a rip with mediocre food and worse service! They don't even pretend to care.

Lokal is a favorite of mine, you get great food with none of the pretentious attitude thrown around across the street at Five Leaves. All the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, and eating outdoors across from McCarren park is delightful. My favorite things to order are the salmon, pizza, and the chicken panini. Quality is consistent and I love the friendly atmosphere. I live on the same block as Lokal and it's sad to see Five Leaves constantly packed with customers across the street when the servers there can barely be bothered to look at you, much less actually serve you food.

I always like the food at Lokal, but I must admit, with great embarrassment, the portions are all too small for me. I always leave relatively hungry. If I had to suggest something off the menu, it would be the burger because it's a pretty substantial plate of food. I never think to go here because I don't feel it's a substantial meal.

I am lucky enough to have this wonderful restaurant around the corner from me. The staff are so friendly and make you feel welcome. It's as if you're at a friends house for dinner. The food is great too, has a great range as well. Enjoy finger foods like a burger or have salmon or any of their other tasty dishes. Great brunch deal on the weekend. $11 pre fixe. And their bloody mary's are only $3 each! You can have 3 drinks for the price you'd pay somewhere else!

A group of friends and I decided to try out Lokal last night. The wait staff was personable and extremely attentive. We never felt rushed, although one of the members of our party didn't arrive for nearly half an hour. The food was very good and the overall experience was excellent. I had the fish of the day, which was a broiled trout...fresh and delicious. The fried calamari was excellent with spicy & crunchy breading that unlike anything I've ever had. Vegetarians beware because there isn't much in the way of meatless dishes, though you'll be fine if you indulge in chicken or fish. The desserts were beautifully rich and yummy! Try the bread pudding. It's unreal.
