Came to Lorely with a German friend who has only been in the States for a few years and he swears here is where a New Yorker can find the most authentic German/Austrian cuisine. Being fairly unfamiliar with such foods, my naive palette was won over by the delicious schnitzel, warm pretzels and french fries, grand beer selection and overall casual, comfortable vibe of the atmosphere and fellow patrons. Isolated on Rivington, this location is also a great place to enjoy a football match.

I've been here several times with many different groups of friends. The pretzels are friggin' amazing and the schnitzel is completely authentic (I took a group of German Swiss kids here and they were amazed). The beer selection is delicious, if a bit pricey. The service on the other hand is less than stellar, which is a shame because this is such a cute spot and i'm pretty sure all the staff are German speaking. I've had dishes not be served, bills entirely screwed up and been stuffed in a back corner of the patio and completely ignored. I think as long as you get a good seat where you are in the line of sight of the waiters your golden. It might be a better choice for afterwork brews and snacks rather than a sit-down meal.

Nothing really special about this place, but it was a nice change from the overcrowded bier gartens through out NYC. If you enjoy well crafted beers and something off the beaten path, this is a nice change!

The beers are well selected and the draft is well performed. Try the Jever that has a very crisp taste. Avoid the Koelsch in big glasses, it stays much fresher in the smaller ones. We waited 55 minutes for our food. The Schnitzel was dry like cardboard (rated 2) but the Sauerbraten tasty and moist (6). The place has an atmosphere of a Highschool Gym at play-off time, no chance for a decent conversation. The communal tables are fun. So, if you go, go for the beer.

This place thinks it's doing you favor letting you in the front door- the service was memorably bad (bordered on confrontational/aggressive) and overshadowed what should be a cool experience. Biergarten's should provide a laid back good time- Loreley's goes out of it's way to ensure you leave with neither.
