One of the best in Astoria

I've been living in Astoria for about 5 years and, despite what many say on internet boards, I have found the local restaurant scene to be lacking. If you're not into Greek then there are not many great places above the "cheap and easy" range. The chef here does a great job with a mix of Brazilian dishes (traditional and interesting from Bahia, etc.) but has some great originality. The fare is certainly more interesting than many of the typical Brazalian places you come by here. He does a great sea bass and shrimp risotto special that should be on the menu. The place could use a remodel, but the food brings me back.

Cozy & Authentic...but worth the wait?

The food was authentic, and the atmosphere was comfortable and cozy. However, none of the food preparations were good enough to give us incentive to return. Also we found the service slow and impersonal. The two waiters would have benefited from having someone to bus their tables for them. A nice meal, with a good value for the food. But would we return? Probably not.

Simply Brilliant

This restaurant is a gem in Long Island City. All the dishes are superb, full of flavor. I highly recommend the chicken breasts in white wine sauce, but the seafood is also wonderful. Everything is perfectly fresh, fragrant, just wonderful. The decor is a bit low-key, but it's absolutely worth a trip once in while, even from far away. You get five-star quality for two-star prices.

Malagueta: Fun and different look at Brazilian Cuisine

What I like best about this casual-dining restaurant is that the style of dishes is not what one would consider "typically" Brazilian. Hats off to the chef and owner for their originality. I especially recommend any of their seafood dishes, notably the "Moqueca de Camarao" (shrimp stew) or "Corvina"! But you can't go wrong with anything. Definitely try the Passion Fruit Mousse for dessert. The service is friendly and energetic. My usual waiter knows a lot about the dishes and does a great job helping people who don't quite know what to expect, or maybe are not familiar with Brazilian cuisine. I've enjoyed dining in and ordering out. It's out of my way but definitely worth the trip.
