Mama's doesn't skimp on portions

Let me first start out by saying, whoa. This was such an awesome find. I was craving some macaroni and cheese this past week and unsure what to do about it. One place that caught my eye was Mamas Food Shop in the East Village. Fast forward - now that I’ve been, I couldn’t believe I didn’t hear about this place sooner. Tucked on the corner of 3rd and B behind some shrubs, there’s a screen door leading to a small dining room. This connects to another room with a very open kitchen, the sink is actually in the same area where you order, and a glass counter. The dining room is filled with old timey photos of women, presumably other Mamas and a few tables. The ordering room for lack of a better term is set up cafeteria style with all of the food precooked and ready to go. Before you scoff at this non-gourmet set-up, consider the following: For $13.50 you get a meat and two sides. I went for the baked chicken with mac & cheese (check!) and a tomato salad. Also, there’s no wait because everything is already done! It just needs to go on your plate! Great for a night when cooking seems more daunting than usual. Also also, the helpings are HUGE. Easily two meals worth of food on one plate. I literally got half a chicken and two mountainous sides. Bottom Line: For huge amounts of a quick, home-style cooked meal in a no frills setting, Mamas is it.

Gigantic portions

I always make sure I am good and hungry when I eat here - the portions really are enormous! My personal favorites are the mac and cheese, meatloaf, and sweet potatoes, but the less heavy offerings (string beans, salmon) are pretty decent as well.
