I can only assume the reviewer visited this restaurant years ago, when it was perhaps under different management. I was at Mapo Tofu for the first time last night and thought it was some of the best Chinese food I've had in NYC. Of note: spicy cucumber appetizer (doesn't sound like it would be good, but it IS), fish with chilies and ginger, and stir-fried bok choy. I'm already craving it again. Also, it feels very quintessential, timeless New York - the central casting of New York Chinese restaurants - which I always enjoy.
