We were looking for seafood and tons of it. Love creole so we headed to Mara's and were not disappointed. Everything was fresh and delicious. Started with raw oysters and fried green tomatoes. Moved on to the shrimp and crab fest and finished with bananas foster. Everything was fabulous and you MUST save room for dessert-I can't wait to go back for beignets! Cocktails and abita beer on tap-what more could you ask for? Super casual and it felt like we were back on the gulf rather than the East Village. Service was great-Mara herself was our waitress and she made us feel like family! That's SO rare up here in these parts. Make a reservation because it gets crowded fast. If you like fresh seafood with some heat, this is the place for you. Need to try the BBQ-looked amazing but we were too full to try it this time.

I really tried....I ordered the seasonal steamed artichoke - which was not steamed all the way and too firm at times. The fried catfish was uneventful. I tasted no seasoning in the cornmeal so I added hot sauce in order to "make it work". The non-mashed mashed potatoes were gross - I just couldn't take a second bite. The Pecan pie tasted like it came right out of the refrigerator. I was told they make it there but I highly doubt it. It tasted like some defrosted pie! I tried, I really did but this place is a major let down. If you have never had this type of cuisine you may enjoy what they serve here BUT if you have been to Louisiana and know good food from down south - don't bother coming to this EAST VILLAGE let down. Lastly $50 for one person to dine at this spot is ridiculous. A courteous staff can't make up for such a poor dining experience. I will never ever return.

Most of the food we tried was delicious and surprisingly in NYC, authentic Louisana cooking. However, the rude staff ruined our meal. I have never had such terrible service at a restaurant before in my life, and certainly not at one where a full meal is upwards of $30. My friends were made extremely uncomfortable and a lovely birthday party turned into a stressful, miserable situation. Take your business elsewhere!

I can't believe how we were treated. We were told we couldn't have any desserts that were warm because they needed our table for another party coming in. Then when we asked for change for a $20 they refused to until we paid for the entire check first saying they were afraid that we would run out on the check. One of our party is pregnant and all of us ranged in ages from our late 20's to early 40's and the tiny restaurant had their cashier right by the only exit.

Jambalaya, Gumbo and Etouffee are all side dishes and the jambalaya is served sauceless. Crayfish stuck in shell. Oysters are a value at a dozen for $9. Decor is like eating in a kite. Painted bricks on hanging plastic. Maybe this sounds cool to you, though.

The best cajun & N'awlins style food in town. The gumbo is great, just like home cooked for sure. You cannot miss with this place and it's not expensive. Our Fav's are the oysters.
