Worst food poisoning I've ever had!

I've eaten here 3 times as I live in the area. For the most part I do rather enjoy the food. Normally, I stick to the meat. The last time i went I decided to try the mussels. My husband - the tuna. Bad decision. 45 mins later i was vomiting, which continued for 14 hrs. I was so violently ill i had to be admitted to hospital where they diagnosed me with Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning. I have never been so violently ill in my life. My husband also suffered from food poisoning. Nothing as severe as mine, but he was still vomiting and ill for a couple of days. Perhaps stick the meat and you might be alright. By the way, the maître d' can drop the attitude, he only works in a restaurant for god's sake.

Review by a native Belgian

The food at Markt was not only delicious, it was authentic! I ate Shrimp croquette and steak tartare and was pleasantly surprised. My wife had Carbonade Flamande, and again, very happy with how they prepared it. There have been some reservations about the food from other reviewers. E.g. the bread on the croque monsieur was really thin. That's how we do it in Belgium! When you try foreign cuisine, you do yourself a service by keeping an open mind. The chance that you discover something new and will actually like it actually increases. Another person (on another forum) complained that the food was not as he knew it from a holiday in France... Same objection! It's Belgian food, come and explore and leave preconceptions behind. As for some complaints that the service was lacking... on the night we went my wife and I were treated in a friendly and helpful manner by 2 waitresses. Everybody was very nice and very professional. Not sure why some people had bad experiences. Mind you, considering how ready some people were to judge instead of experience, perhaps their attitude became a self fulfilling prophecy? I recommend this place wholeheartedly!

Snoot

We were delighted to return to Markt in its new location to enjoy our favorite dishes. If it wasn't for the snooty host who denied we had a reservation and then finally realized that the reservationist had hopelessly misspelled our name but never apologized for the error, we would have had our expectations realized. The food was terrific, the drinks were generous with bourbon, and the atmospere ideal. But that snooty host...ruined everything. Not a smile, not an apology, not an effort to make it right. He couldn't care less.

If the service wasn't so inattentive ...

... I might have liked the new Markt more. They looked confused about our lunch reservation at the door--even though we'd called an hour before. Once we sat down, the water and beer came quickly enough, and then the soup, and then nothing. About an hour later (no word from the waiter as to why our food was delayed), we asked. He said "the mussels take time." Oh really, it takes a long time to steam mussels? And that's one of your signature dishes? Couldn't get his attention for the check, even after asking a bus boy to bring him over. Food wasn't bad, but nothing special. Croque Monsieur was on thin bread (but great cheese inside), shrimp sandwich was good but average. Fries and beer were the best part. Next time I'd sit at the bar and order that.

Funny how I got such a good service with Belgian stew and fries, at home you can get it at a ' friedhome' in NY in a fancy restaurant, how 2 cities can differentiate, but overall it well done, quality ok, and service on a monday by a Boston art girl excellent! Markt I'm proud to be a Belgian..Michael-Antwerp

Markt may be a place where you can impress some of the relatives coming to pay a visit to New York (or to give a business dinner with people not living in the city a more trendy flavour). There are a lot of "interesting" people at this place and it is suprisingly always crowded, even though the decor is not remarkable and the food is - in this price range - below average.

Too noisy a restaurant

We were a party of 4, we ordered the seafood platter to share and we all had the lobster entree, one in broth and the others in creamy beer sauce. The latter was the better of the 2 choices. Desserts were OK. Beers were good. The bar scene was hopping and as a result, the entire place was way too noisy for conversation. I could not hear my friends across the table and we had to yell to talk. This is definitely not a place to talk business. Service was so so and the timing was a bit off. They brought out our entrees way before we finished our first course, they took them back.

Service was horrendous, terrible host. I have a party of six, food arrived in varying times... up to a 25 minute difference. Food was cold (meant to be hot), limp and just plain awful. The service was so bad, we didn't even feel bad for not leaving a tip.

Belgian beer is good here, but having been to Belgium many times I did not find the food that exciting... Especially the 'Belgian Fries' ( yes the real name is not French but Belgian Fries) are not up to the necessary standard... Please try to be more authentical.
