Don't Waste Your Time
By willyc on 10/7/2007
Went on Saturday and they were out of 1) the lobster roll; 2) lobster; 3) crab cakes; and 4) shrimp. I thnink they also said they were out od some appetizers as well. Of course, they only said this after we were seated and they took our drink orders. I guess they figured theyd get us to pay for a few beers. We said we would just finish our drinks and just go. At that point, they became a bit pushy and asked if we were sure we didnt want to order. Definitely not --- we left to go to Eds, which was great and actually had what was on their menu! Dont waste your time going to Marys -- go to Eds or Pearls or BLT Fish or any of the other real fish "shacks" in the city.

Noisy, dingy, and cramp little hole-in-the-wall with rude and absent service and a comically overpriced menu. It's a shame I have to give it a star. To top it all off, I wouldn't recommend the food to anyone. Wish I could get that hour of my life back
Overpriced, Overcrowded, Arrogant.

Overcrowded. You know something’s wrong when the tables are so close that they need to be pulled into the center of the room to get up. Good if you want to hear every word of your neighbor’s conversation though. They only reason people wait in line is because it’s in a cool neighborhood. Overpriced. $30 for a lobster roll? And with tables jammed so close are they are paying high rent or could it be that we sense certain greed and arrogance? Safety. My girlfriend’s $600 cashmere shawl was damaged by a space heater temporarily placed in the exact spot the host directed me to leave our personal effects. If our dinner had lasted longer the shawl could have set on fire and sent the dozens of customers in the over capacity space climbing over tables to get to the single exit. Arrogance. Despite our complaint, the owner Mary Redding failed to attempt any reasonable repair to the damage. She expressed no concern about our strong dissatisfaction about the damage itself and about the way she has been treating us as customers.
Don't drop your line here!

Not that it's bad or anything, but it doesn't reach the standards of others. Of course the comparisons to Pearl Oyster Bar aren't fair because that is the standard bearer but even Fish on Bleeker is better than this. Titilating feuds aside, the fried oysters and clams should have been clam singular because we got one. The cockles were just gross and the fried fish was incinerated. And everybody looks so angry here. Why? Don't get how the usually smart Adam Platt (or his wife) could have liked this!
Not a keeper.....

Living in the hood - Mary's is just like camp! Gave it a few more tries - lines were shorter - and disappointed each time. Maybe it would do better in Florida!

Food was mediocre and the wait was absurd to get into this place. Isnt worthwhile waiting for! Next time there are 20 or more places better that will treat you much nicer, I can assure you!
Mediocre at best

I was so excited to try this place, but in truth, 'twas dissapointing. The atmosphere is really cute but the food was so average and bordered on gross. The lobster roll was like eating a bowl of Hellman's mayonnaise and the other things we ordered were either just ok or actually overcooked, like the octopus. Given the price tag, you'd do better elsewhere.

Possibly worst service in New York. I went on a week night, the place wasn't busy, but the waitresses were rude and condescending. Lobster roll is great. But when you have to deal with people like that, why bother? I'm taking all my friends to Pearl's or Ed's.
Rushed and Rude...

Ever since I visited Mary’s Fish Camp five years ago I became a fervent supporter of the establishment. However, last night I went back with my wife and a friend and was absolutely floored by their lack of hospitality. We started our dinner with a bottle of wine. After that, the waitress began pushing us to order the appetizers and our main course. I do know that the place can get a bit crowded on weekends and understand that they want a quick turnaround. There are other places that get just as jam-packed as this joint and they do not make you feel unwelcome! Well, the rest of the night the waitress just tried to figure out every which way to make us eat faster. The food was good but the service was terrible. I am sorry to say that I will not return – here there are many other options, hey, it’s the city what the heck!
Not what it's cracked up to be

Deafening, jam-packed, long waits, poor value in terms of what you get for your money ($32 for a lobster roll!). A whole black bass (also $32), although quite small, was grilled perfectly and came with nice selection of grilled vegetables. Good but not impressive in any way. Whole fish like this is de rigueur in many Greek restaurants, with more pizzaz and usually better value. This restaurant is enormously popular. Go figure.
