The New Nobu is here!

Unlike Nobu, you can get through when you call Matsuri and can reserve a table... Unlike Nobu, the food is really good and the service attentive and very nice! I liked the kobe beef, the sushis, the cod and loved the fresh eel roll! Don't bother calling Nobu 100 times!
A good time that came to a bad ending

What started out as a good time, good food and good service came to an abrupt halt after the appetizers. Once the appetizers arrived, 45 minutes passed by without the main course of sushi arriving. The waiter then began lying to us saying that the sushi was on the way. After wating another 35 minutes, our complaints were falling on deaf ears. Once we finally got the general manager, things started to happen. It seems that our main course order was misplaced and the waiter didn't know what to say so he lied to us. While I hope that what happened to my group won't happen to yours, I strongly recommend keeping on top of your waiter to check on the progress of your order. Hopefully and enjoyable evening won't turn out as bad as ours. To add insult to injury, the coat check lost my boyfriend's scarf and were unappologetic about it.
Bones to pick with Matsuri...

My fiancee and I went last Thursday to celebrate our anniversary and we were both disappointed. We ordered one of the specials, it was an oyster dish that they usually serve raw, but it was baked. In fact baked was the first word in it's title. They brought us the raw one by mistake and after we told our server we wanted to get the dish we had ordered he returned telling us that it was very similar to the raw dish and wasn't worth replacing it! Then why was it a special? Adding insult to injury, my fiancee found a HUGE bone in a piece of yellowtail and scallion roll... that's when we decided to never go back!!

Trust me - the service is great. I found the waitress attentive and effecient, food above average and the space spectacular. Think they might want to add more interesting sushi options.
High expectations don't make for great food

I was expecting so much more - which I certainly got in the decor - but the food was about as good as my neighborhood, day-to-day sushi place. And the more creative dishes didn't come through - certainly not for the price. Baked clams nestled on a salty foam (I think that's what it was) were lost in their salt and breading. I'll try it again, but not for the sushi.
Quality, but at a price

Has a good buzz to add to good food. The room is impressive. Great apps, I enjoyed the yellowtail, tuna, and the seared scallops. The 5 pc. sushi plate was exceptional, and the sashimi was quite good too. They could use a few more sushi rolls/dishes. Very hard to call it creative because it has been done so many times before, but they do it right. Cost is up there with NOBU but at least the atmosphere is better. The service was fine but I could see how it could be off since the combination of young waiters and large resturants sometimes doesnt gel, but I was fine.
The worst dining experience - EVER!

If you want to eat I don’t recommend Matsuri. Sure the ambiance is nice (once you get past the entrance, which is more like the trading room floor than restaurant) but is it good enough to compensate for a lack luster menu and the most incompetent Maitre D' I’ve ever experienced? Our party of 4 waited 2 and ˝ hours for our table with a reservation. I wish that I would have known to pack snacks. Especially since trail mix would have tasted better than the sushi at this overrated disaster of an establishment. But back to Matsuri’s biggest liability, the Maitre D', who had absolutely no control over the patrons waiting for tables. At any given time there were at least 20 people standing around his station screaming for a table. An hour into our ordeal I realized a pattern. 2 types of people were being seated, greasy guys threatening to beat up the Maitre D' and guys greasing the Maitre D'. Classic. You’d better have a really fabulous meal waiting for me after a 2 and ˝ hour wait for a table. Unfortunately, the food is as hopeless as the service.
Japanese with a flair of true festival!

Perfect! lovely lovely lovely... The food was incredible! (GET the sirloin steak, the duck breast, the mushrooms, the seared tuna, sake black cod - the tasty list goes on and on). The sushi/sashimi fish practically swam in from the ocean, its firm suppleness is rarely found. The rolls could be a bit more varied but they are so good! - delicately soft and chewy... The specialty cocktails and the sake are out of this world, created with real japanese style. The bartenders are FUN and enthusiastic - the waitstaff was wonderful and attentive. While it can get packed Thurs - Sat it's worth the energetic atmosphere. For truly quiet and private nights go on a Sunday or Monday (slow nights means more personal attention) The decor is unrivaled in its gorgeous arched ceiling and floaty imported japanese lanterns. Celebrity watching a + and a definate new favorite of mine...

I've been to Matsuri a couple of times and let me tell you, the service is amazing. The server was so nice and helpful. He gave us the best suggestions on what to order and what not to. The place is beauty, such a wonderful experience. It may get a little crazy in there on friday and saturday nights, but once you go on a night that it's not so jam packed, you'll have the best time ever. The recommended dishes were delicious, the specialty cocktails and the sake, all superb. *RECOMMENDED DINNING NIGHTS* tuesdays - thursdays

Matsuri in the lower level of the Maritime Hotel is a combination of Meatpacking district cool and Japanese cool. The food is reasonable priced and the service is very good. The customers seem to understand and enjoy both "in" food as well as more traditional fare. Overall very very good.
