I have eaten here several times recently and it has been consistently poor. The kitchen has just gotten lazy and it shows in the food. The pasta is always way over cooked (unforgivable for an Italian eatery), the garlic is thrown into the sauce (which tastes like it's from a jar) whole instead of being sliced and 2 out of 3 times the garlic was burned to black in every dish I ordered. I live in the neighborhood and Max used to be my choice for Italian... but there are many other choices now for Max to be so lazy and careless with their food. It would be a good value if the food were not so bad. Very disappointing!

I took three girlfriends from out of town and when we got there I was surprised with how tiny the place was but they thought it was adorable so we stayed. We were told the wait was 45 minutes...we waited for an hour and a half and when we were finally sat our server took his time and then came over and announced that the kitchen was closing so did we know what we wanted? We ordered a bottle and our meals but we cldn't relax and enjoy the food (which was reasonably good) because we felt rushed. Everyone kept eyeing us and trying to take our plates before we were finished...what could have been a really nice dinner felt hurried and uncomfortable. Finally when the server brought our check he had added 20% even though we were only four! I confronted him and argued with me and then talked about it to the other servers right in front of us. Ridiculously bad. Don't go to this one. I'm actually trying the East Village one tonight because the food might be worth it...really hope I'm not TOTALLY disappointed again!

Very comfortable bi-level decor with high ceilings. Small space but we never felt cramped. Gnocchi and lobster ravioli were great. Large portions and very reasonable prices. Great experience, highly recommended.
