Some people compare Maya to Rosa Mexicano, I don't think there is any comparison -- Maya is the best Mexican food in the city. Their Mango Mojito is amazing and the atmosphere is awesome, perfect for a group dinner or a fun date.

Each Bite's Better than the Last

I've gone to Maya twice and have yet to be even slightly disappointed. Their Mango Mojito is simply delicious and I am in love with their Enchiladas de Pollo. My boyfriend ordered the Pescado a la Veracruzana (red snapper) and while I'm not a fish person, if I had ordered his dish I would have eaten every bite. The chocoflan was very decadent and I went out on a limb trying it because I'm not a fan of flan in general. You can't go wrong with anything you order! I admit I'm not a fan of their prix fixe menu because the entree options are shrimp or pork (I can't eat either), but they have an amazing menu nonetheless.

Good decor. Food was good. Not outstanding. A bit pricey, but worth it if you are looking for good atmosphere. Would definitely go back, but am not running to do so.

The food at Maya is hands down the best Mexican food in NY. With the influx of Mexican restaurants that have opened in the last few years but none can compare with Richard Sandoval's innovative yet tradtional dishes. The balance of flavors and use of heat is perfection. I love Mexican food, and if I lived next door to Maya I would eat there a few times a week.

I had the perfect date at Maya last Friday. Food was great the Tacos de Filete and Tamal are amazing; they just melt in your mouth. For entree I had the Pescado Talla, which is really interesting, and for dessert the caramel crepes, they are delicious and I have to say they might be aphrodisiac! Service is ok; friendly but not too pushy. Try the Mango Margarita, it the best I have ever had.

When accepting reservations for Valentine's night, they forget to mention that regular menu is not available. Having arrived I found jacked up prices on a pre-fixed skimpy dinner menu. As to the food, I either couldn't eat it because of my ethnic restrictions (I don't do shrimp, pork, etc) or wouldnn't have picked to begin with. As we were finishing that miserable ruined dinner, we saw another couple that walked in and found themselves in the same position. But they were smarter than us, they left!

Time was when Maya was am authentic and exciting shining light on the all too often Tex-Mexed Mexican restaurant scene. Those days are over. Perhaps because the undeniably talented chef/owner Richard Sandoval is too consumed with his new Pompano and other ventures? Food now borders on formulaic and service can be downright mean spirited. A request to turn up the heat on tepid quacamole which had been ordered spicey was met with an astounding and potentially dangerous response - the quacamole was returned chock full of chopped up jalapeno, cleverly hidden from view. One bite literally burned my date's mouth. We had wanted to give a former favorite neighborhood haunt another chance, but we were outta there and will not be back.

Maya's sunny atmosphere is not enough to save it from its bad food. A friend and I visited Maya on a recent Sunday evening, wanting to escape the cold and rain of a typical NY winter; we should have stayed at home. The guacamole was middling and the chips greasy. The tamal appetizer was doughy and tasteless. But most disappointing was the mole--a watery concoction over cold chicken--which went perfectly with the waiter's pompous attitude in reminding us that Maya is the best Mexican restaurant in NYC. Why is this the received wisdom? I should have answered that the food was nothing like the deliciously rich, authentic Mexican dishes my mother used to make.

I'm not a big fan of Mexican food, but the food at Maya is very good. The service was on point as well. I took a close friend of mine there and her and I had an amazing dinner and never felt rushed one bit. I definitely want to go back sometime very soon.
