there have got to be better places than this in NYC. Please. Food was bland and poor quality. Megu has a nice atmosphere and service was very well-meaning and friendly but that's not enough.

All of the bad reviews of MEGU... Are we talking about the same restaurant? I was in tears after the last time I dined at MEGU in Midtown. The atmosphere was awe-inspiring, the service was very detail-oriented and friendly. The food was exquisite! Especially the Scallop Tartare with Uni and Caviar. And the steaks on the stone with the hennessy! Even the President of the restaurant visited our lil romantic table! Truly a sublime dining experiece!

We dinned there last night for restaurant week.
The place is very expensive and the value of food is nothing special... really we were up for a superb experience and it was nothing close.
Three of us had the restaurant week menu and one decided to order a la carte. A sushi piece, complementaries from the chef were brought, to three of us and the forth person was left with a plate empty for 20 minutes before they brought our food. Tasteless gesture, I think.
Yes, it is a trendy place with a beautiful decor but the dinning experience is poor.
AND the music is too loud.
Not for date nor business you cannot have a conversation.

Where to start? The ice buddha is what everyone raves about. What ever floats your boat, or buddha, but ice sculptures don't do it for me. I came with a group of 6 and was flabergasted by the lack of service and sub par boring sushi. The servers were nice, but their service was very infrequent and extremely slow. The only highlight during my visit was the red miso soup. Kudos to the guy that was thrilled about mixing my salad, but having just eaten lunch at Chop't, I was not impressed by table side dressing pouring. So, pay the $7 for the soup and get your sushi elsewhere. The only slightly redeeming quality of this place was the freshly grated japanese horseradish..again, with a plethora of asian markets here, I can get a grater and have a whirl and save $150/pp.Megu was never on my "bucket-list" of restaurants, but I can say, I will live happily knowing I never will waste nor let my friends waste their money there again.

Go To Look at Buddha Ice Statues, Not to Eat Good Food

It seldom gets more extravagant than Megu when it comes to decor. But the way I like to eat out, I prefer to pay for good food rather than nice ice sculptures and fancy walls to look at. And when it comes to the food,Megu robs you. They insult your intelligence with dressed up dishes that really don't do much more than look good. And some don't even do that. We ordered the umami tasting menu, and one of the courses was fried asparagus. Nothing against fried vegetables, but when you're paying 125dollars for 6courses, whatthe [insert obscenity here] are fried vegetables doing as one of the courses. Then there was the kobe beef which was not as fatty, flavorful, and delicate as other cuts of kobe I've had. Of my experiences with kobe in Asia and the U.S., this was by far the worst. By serving the beef on a hot stone japanese style, Megu seemed to be selling the novelty of Ishi-Yaki (Japanese hot stone cooking) rather than the beef itself. The whole thing was an overpriced travesty designed to defraud ignorant American diners. I'm sorry I went there.

I was semi-pleased with my dining experience at Megu. The service and decor are what you would expect at a place like this..fabulous. But I wasn't reminiscing about the food days after. The ingredients were very fresh, the presentation was lovely, and the portions were actually not that small..but that could also be because I'm on a diet.. so I might not be the best judge of portion sizes. The speciality cocktails were weak..I would opt for wine for sake.

The average rating of 4.9 out of 10 for Megu? This exemplifies the reason why the average American’s palate remains a laughingstock among Asians and Europeans. Megu is a very fine Japanese restaurant serving modern Japanese cuisine, which accommodates western culinary sensibilities without losing its spiritual authenticityin the art and craft of Japanese food making and preparation. I chose this restaurant to take my (European) wife for her birthday and she was ecstatic in every way. I am from Japan and have eaten at many of the finest restaurants in Japan. In terms of pure taste, if the best in Japan is 10, Megu is 7.5 while Nobu is 8 (because sushi is better there) but in America these two are as good as a Japanese restaurant can get. The Interior space of Megu in Tribeca is singularly beautiful, an original creation of one of the most talented interior designers from Japan. The service is also excellent, though we may have been especially lucky to have had the General Manager Mr. Yokoyama ‘s meticulous attentions to details. This connoisseur from Japan approves Megu and recommends it to everyone who can appreciate fine Japanese food.

My dad got a promotion so we went to Megu to celebrate, we heard it was where 1 scene of Kill Bill was filmed. So we thought the food would be good too. BUT... it was awful, the dishes were so $$$$$$$$$$$$$ and the portion was so tiny, my family 3 ordered the appitizer main and dessert, when the bill came my belly was still growling... total $500
so over all
:(

Service was good, but there are SO MANY servers walking around the restaurant; it's a bit crazy. For the amount of $ they charge, tables are way too close to each other unless you get the round tables. Food was mediocre. The space is way smaller than we thought. The pictures on their site may make you think that the place is huge. And the AC wasn't function well on the night we went; we were sweating through our meals.
One good thing about the place is that they have great cocktail.
Save your money, go to Buddakan (best food, wonderful atmosphere - you won't regret it).

We had like 3 bites of meal and end up paying close to $300. Stupid presentation of Edamame. Ugly interior. Embarassement of Japanese food and culture. I was so upset. I hope nobody misunderstand Japan by going to Megu.
