The restaurant completely lost our reservation and did nothing to accomodate us when we were there. We were told "it should only be 5-10 minutes" three times and finally got fed up and left. I get the sense that they did not lose our reservation but rather did not have the guile to just admit that they were full. Like other bullsh*t NYC restaurants, the policy at Mercadito is to take more reservations than they can honor in order to ensure that they get business. Considering we tried to eat here on a Tuesday, I can only imagine how many frustrated customers wait for their "reservations" on a weekend. Save your money and eat at Papaya Dog instead.

LITERALLY- this restuarant smells like a bathroom or urinal or something! The food is extremely overpriced for what it is and the margaritas are just not right! Our service was ok but to be honest the restaurant smelled so bad I am not sure why we stayed. Tacos, burritos, whats coming out of your bathroom!

Mercadito came highly recommended on several websites and I was excited to try it out with several of my friends for Easter Brunch. The website menu boasted an all you can drink sangria special for brunch which was the clincher for picking this place above several other places. Upon arriving at the restaurant, that part of the menu was sloppily crossed off with a sharpie and was told by waitstaff that this is no longer part of the menu as of two weeks ago. The issue here is that I called for reservations and specificially told them that I was coming for brunch. Could that not have mentioned that the deal that they were known for was no longer an option. We were severely disappointed and heard several other customers being told the same thing by waiters about the deletion of the special from the menu. On top of the that, the food was so-so. I mean how to do you mess up mexican food? I ordered the skirt steak sandwich but it appeared that they forgot to put any steak in mine. My sister-in-law ordered eggs and tortillas but the meal came out as a big soggy mess. She had to put a napkin on it because she couldn't even look at it. Never again.

We knew we were in trouble when our waitress asked us if we wanted any dessert and we hadn't yet received any of our dinner order. Could be a fluke thing that our ticket got "lost", but then we had to remind the waitress again that we had more food coming from the kitchen. That said, the food is good for sharing and the drinks are great, spicy cucumber margarita was excellent. The tapas-like presentation (that other people seemed to be enjoying) is fun for a group setting. The food would be a 10 if it only was served hotter, which is strange considering the food seems to come out as it's ready. It was just barely still warm in most cases. By the time we went to leave, their computer was down and we waited another 20 mins for them to add up our bill. All said and done, we were there for 2 1/2 hours! Recommended, but keep on top of your waitress.

Went here last night after hearing some good things about this place. I should have probably stayed away from the moment when I made a reservation for 6 people 1 night ahead of time and was told "sure, no problem." For larger parties, they seat you in the back, which has an ever-so-nice urinal aroma. Being lazy, we didn't bother leaving but normally I would have walked out of the place. The service was good but the food wasn't particularly fetching. Ceviche was ho-hum, not particularly exciting. The margaritas were nothing special and somewhat bland. We had the baha fish tacos, tacos al pastor, and the cactus leaf tacos. The fish tacos were actually pretty great but the pork in the pastor was dried out and the cactus was rubbery. Despite the good reviews, you're better off avoiding this place.

I went here for dinner with a few friends. The food was great, especially the guac. The restaurant is really small but in a good way. Everything was fine, until we were practically thrown out after we paid our check. I was not at all impressed with the rude service.

Contrary to what it says... this is no place to take your child(ren). The front room is so crowded, our party of 3 could not figure how to be seated without moving two tables and three chairs (and there was only one other couple sitting down then). There is no place for strollers and no place to turn around. However, the marg i had was fantastic and the gauc wonderful (we tried the taster... the one with mint is amazing.) The fish tacos looked nothing like they do in this photo! A small over deep fried glance of fish, dumped with a ton of coleslaw. You can not mix and match... it's four of a kind now. Service was fantastic and fast (because we had a kid maybe?) There is no way 4 tacos are worth 13 bucks... nor the marg in the highball glass, worthy of 10.

I actually am updating this review, because my iniital review was of Mercadito Cantina (same owner, same block). Since then I have been to Mercadito proper and while the food was of the same great quality, the service almost had my date and I walking out. We were 2 of 4 people sitting at the bar in a totally empty restaurant on a weekday. It took almost 15 minutes for anyone to ask us what we wanted and after ordering those initial drinks we had to wave down the bartender (who was 2 feet away) for anything else we wanted each and every time. The other main difference between the two venues is that this one actually serves tequila... In my opinion, stick with the Mercadito Cantina, the trade off in alcohol is worth the better (albeit not great) service.

I used to LOVE this place. Unfortunately last time that I was there w 2 mexican friends, I got shrimp tacos, the first one was excellent, but for my surprise, while I was picking up the second one to eat it, I felt something sticking out from the tortilla. So I found A SCREW!!! A 2” black screw IN my taco!! First I thought it was some kind of like shell from the shrimp but when I opened the taco to see what it was I found the screw!!!! I was so disgusted, thank god i didn't bite it, because maybe I wouldn't have swallowed it but I could've broke my tooth!! When the waiter came because he saw something wasn't ok, I told him I found a screw in my taco, so he called I guess the manager, he apologized and went to the kitchen, he came back and explained to me that there was a loose counter in the kitchen so one of the screws must've fell in the food!! They were really sorry and they did apologize, but they only gave me a free drink.

Have a craving for mexican, but can't decide what you want? Mercadito's dishes come in small plates of 3, and you can order up any assortment of tacos. Though the wait a little long, and the waitstaff disorganized, the food is beyond worth it. The front of the restaurant is cramped, able to seat probably 14 or so, plus maybe another handful at the bar. However, there is a back room, but you lose the ambient of the 'little market'. The waiter was very knowledgeable of each dish, and made the best reccomendations. Next time, I'd be tempted to just let him order for me, it was that amazing. Oh, and hey, it doesn't break your wallet!
