had a very good time at MERCAT. excellent wine list, the "sale" page is funny too, your chance to drink mucho expensive wines for a much lower price. bartender was polite, hospitable and very good in identifying what type of wine we liked (i like heavy and big, my friend likes lite and not spicy). big glasses, excellent bench outside for smoking. tapas delicious. all GOOD!

Mercat is the type of restaurant that aspires to be an exceptional Spanish restaurant, while loosing sight of the fact that it should be a decent overall restaurant first and foremost. The wine list was extensive, but the waiter's understanding of the wine and even liquor list was disturbingly limited. Realizing the best small Spanish dishes are often fried, Mercat even fell short of tasty fried food. Overly greasy and under flavored, the cheese platter was the most delicious part of the meal. Consistently disappointing Tapas in addition to underwhelming service makes for an over priced experience and a disappointing meal.

I ate here a few times last year, and a few this year. This place is great - extremely well done on the inside, great vibe, nice staff and great food. What more could you want? I think that the prices are good by New York standards, especially given the setting. The food is consistently good and there are always some interesting twists, especially on the new menu. It's an awesome date spot. I don't know what some of the previous reviewers are talking about. I've never had a bad time here.

Go with friends, commandeer the bar, order a round of 1899 and some light mixed faire and certainly the lamb chops to share and just let the evening joyfully slip away.

Went there for a 10pm reservation. Seated at 10:20, order not taken until 10:50, food arrived between 11:40 and midnight. Yes, seriously, midnight. The apologetic waiter comped us a drink, but that was it. Meantime, we had a lovely view of the table next to us, where a group of regulars walked in, greeted everyone, and had food on their table within 20 minures of sitting down. The food was decent, but not that good for the prices, and we'll never go back, even though we live in the neighborhood.

Went here a little after they opened for a good friend's going away. It was a large family style table upstairs. It was lots and lots of food. All very good from what I recalled. I went last week on a date and thank you again. The downstairs was perfect for it. That just right dimly lit level and the food was yummy... The potatoes...get 'em. Artichokes...get 'em. Some stinky but yummy cheeses...got a few too. Quince spread...yum yum

Who ever doesn't like the food here clearly has no clue of what good Catalonian food is. It is well-priced and the wine menu is an experience it's self! You have wines from all around Spain: Priorats, Riojas, Ribera del Duero...And the food is tasty! The selection of dishes is perfect, it captures the essence of Catalonian food. By the way the green peppers (Pimientos de Piquillo or Padrón) are from the northen regions of Spain, and the Jamón is Serrano. I highly recommend Mercat. By the way, try the black calamari fideos with alioli.

Menu is indeed in Catalan. However, the food is certainly NOT. - Jamon is really mediocre "pais" (not serrano) - Cheese selection is quite limited - Bunyols de Bacalla are uneatable - very, very salty - Pimientos del Padron, who knows where they're coming from but certainly not from Padron -and so on.... The wines are very overpriced. Overall, another BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. Amazing that the best Chef in the World is Catalan (Ferran Adria) and there is NOT ONE decent Catalan (or even Spanish) restaurant in New York

There is nothing not to love about this new restaurant. This has a hip and trendy feel without the attitude - the hostess and the bartenders could not have been nicer or provided great suggestions. This is not your average tapas place - the dishes are innovative and interesting. Diverse and unusual winelist - there is not a red rioja on the list - great selection. I intend to be a regular!

Might be the best Spanish tapas joint in town

Ok, so ever since visiting Spain a couple of years of ago, I've been seeking good tapas in the city. Tia Pol, N, Xunta, Pipa, etc are all pretty good. My favorite is probably Alta, but my Spanish friends don't consider it authentic, but it's still very good. So when I heard about Mercat, we had to try. Rolled the dice and held a birthday party there, and it didn't disappoint! Orderd just about the whole menu and everythinig was excellent, with special kudos going to the grilled hen, egg & mushroom dish, fried baby octopus, and specialty cured meats. Nice wine list as well. Great place, I think I have a new favorite tapas place in the city! Definitely try it!
