Amazing food, Insulting service

  • No, I would not go back!

I dined here recently and found it to be a transporting oasis with excellent food, wine, and dessert. I would come back here for the food, but would not bring anyone I would need to impress (do NOT bring people from work--better yet, just dine alone and then get out of there). My server was fine with me but appallingly unprofessional otherwise. She blurted out with laughter conspicuously as a pair of diners exited the restaurant--one of those razzy type snorts--and cackled in Italian to the other servers as soon as the door closed. She had very bad English and had a hard time answering questions about the food or describing it. I left shocked at how childish the front of the house environment was, and write this to reinforce the other reviewers: this restaurant needs to reform the behavior of its servers or replace them, otherwise it will not survive. Kudos to the back of the house--whoever is cooking the food is doing a knockout job.

Don't believe the whiners

It's too bad those folks had such a bad experience, but don't they seem a tad rage-prone weird? Seems they came together and each had to weigh in to try to bring the restaurant down...for example, notice the absurd rating of one out of ten they gave the food. Are these adults or children, and honestly, how would they know about the cuisine if they walked out? Mercato is one of the best Italian dining experiences you will have and enjoy in New York. Nowadays it's packed so they must be doing something right. Most everything is PERFECT, the pastas are unbelievable and soooo authentic. You will never eat better lasagna and their take on pesto is a revelation. The wild boar ragu is sensational, and the seafood preparations are marvelous. 'Tis true the service leaves something to be desired, especially an obsequious, mindless busboy who tries to talk away your food before you are finished and/or if your partner is not done. Find out for yourself, and no, I am not related to the owner.

I can't begin to explain in words my experience here at this restaurant. I have read a number of bad reviews, but dismissed all of them because of how great the great reviews were. How wrong I was. The Hostess was mind blowingly terrible. She seated me next to a water faucet that pretty much gave me a cold shower every time the waiter filled the water pitcher. Then she interrupted my dinner three times to tell us that our tables have been reserved, we were eating our appetizer and only 15 minutes into it. She didn't offer to reseat us elsewhere and try to accommodate us. She basically gave us a 'tough sh*t' shrugg. This lead my friend and her in a screaming match and we left without paying because at that point it didnt make sense to pay for an experience we were experiencing. This really should not happen to anyone. I don't care how great their food is if they can't run their business competently.

I LOOOVE this place... authentic Puglian cuisine in a warm and comfortable atmosphere. Feels like a trattoria in Italy (even most of the staff is Italian). Fantastic food. Great wine. Old-school cocktails. I found my new favorite place in NY!!!!!!
