Quite a disappointment...

Went to NY with a friend who just "had" to go to Bobby Flay's. Well... I'll say this: My brother can cook a hell of a better steak than the Mesa Grill. I got the ribeye which was cooked to medium (like I ordered), but I'm not fond of a burnt outside and a dry inside. I like ribeyes for the flavor of a ribeye; the ribeye flavor simply wasn't there. I just tasted "burntness." My mother had the filet, which again had the correct amount of pink, but it was a huge hunk of meat that somewhat dry and flavorless. I ordered a plain quesadilla for my grandmother (which is what they suggest for children), and it was better than the $39 a-la-carte steaks. My friend got the pork tenderloin which had more flavor than both of the beef dishes, but it was still a bit dry. The service was OK, but not exceptional. The bussing of the table was too slow for me. (I guess I wasn't happy looking at a half-eaten ribeye that I just flew to NY to eat.) Like someone else said, the desert was nothing to remember. Overall, I was quite disappointed.

Mesa Grill definitely has Bobby Flays signature stamp on it. There is a distinct flair in the dishes that showcase his bold use ofÂ Southwestern accented spices and sauces. Each dish is multidimensional in flavor and texture with spices that keep you guessing but constantly interested in what you are tasting. This formula works great in some dishes and falls flat in others. Some things that worked for me were the Cremini Mushroom Quesadilla, the Grilled Mahi Mahi and the Warm Banana Cake. The breadbasket has some delicious blue and yellow corn muffins that are definitely worth trying. Dishes that fell flat were the Salmon Griddle Cake and the overly spiced Mexican Chocolate Pudding ( how can they do that to Mexican chocolate?) As for the ambience at Mesa Grillâ€¦.well there really is no distinctive soul to the place. Itâ€™s rather garish and dowdy. The service is friendly here but it just seems like the whole place needs to pull up its socks. All in all at Mesa Grill, you will experience a meal will pique your interest and is definitely a huge step up from Bar Americain. A total bad experience

I really don't know what happen, but the experience at the place was total disaster. the food was below average, the service is aceptable and the price isn't in accordance with the place/food quality, in other words, overpriced. I cannot reccoment the place either to my enemies. I think Mr. Flay should pass more time in the restaurant looking for new and better recipes, look for the quality of the products and keep the kitchen in control. I personally knows chefs that actually are running restaurants with much betters standards and mush better quality food.
Dont expect very much.....

It seems like Bobby Flay is trying way too hard to create glorified bar food at this rip-off of an establishment. Its an insult to the other gourmet restaurants in New York City, and its obvious he's relying on the couch potato fans of the food network to be wowed with his quesadillas.... The wine list was sub-par as were the entrees. The bathroom was filthy and reminded me of the local Starbucks disgusting mess, and I'm certain I'll never go back to this or any of his other establishments again. If you decide to go to the tourist trap, prepare to be disappointed. I would recommend going to Orsay or Ruhlmanns for REAL gourmet food !

Great experience, wonderful service and food

What a great meal experience we had at Mesa. The food and service were top notch. We started with the spiced pumpkin soup, which was to die for! We had 2 other appetizers, Mahi Mahi for our entree and shared apple pie and a wonderful banana cream dessert. We shared an excellent bottle of German Riesling that was recommended by a member of the staff. All in all the best meal I have ever had in the city.

Awful experience here. Coat check girl was slouched over- looked like I was putting her out handing in my light jacket. Hosts were clueless-looking around at each other and not nailing down when we would be sat. Eventually we were sat in a table so close to someone else I could practically hear them gulping their water. Waiter was haughty and unhelpful. Food was flavorful and decent, but hardly memorable being it was surrounded by such poor service. Manager was disinterested and made poor excuses for all the callouts. Wish the NY mag editors and Boby Flay would revisit. Poor excuse of a restaurant, esp for a celeb chef. Cost of a meal was equivalent to most in NY- I took no issue with the pricing. These days any restaurant, no matter how much an entree is, should put out the best service possible. This place clearly relies on tourists and is pretty high on itself for no reason whatsoever. Was hoping for better giving the Flay brand-complete disappointment.

Mesa Grill seems to have lost a step. Our party was happy that drinks of our choice were offered gratis (though only to the female half) after seating time dragged well beyond our reservation time. Unfortunately, the staff seemed determined to make up for this delay and rushed appetizers in front of us before the wine had arrived! Wine list was manageable, with many names I recognized at under a 50% mark-up (good for Manhattan). Shrimp/corn tamale was a bit too starchy, but the blue corn pancake with duck was delicious. Meat in entrees (pork tenderlon, lamb chops) was more than ample and a bit dry as a result of its mass. Seafood cioppino was the highlight in a balanced green chile sauce. Desserts were forgettable. Unfortunately, the two winged insects hovering around our table were not. It will take another four years before I revisit Mesa Grill given what was experienced for $80-90 per person.
Expect better from Iron Chef

Just goes to show that TV celebrity status does not necessarily translate to great food. Food was average. (If I had such food at a place like Appleby',s I would be happy. Not here.) Presentation was not eye catching and the grilled Mahi Mahi was dry, the lamb OK. Sauce nothing to write home about. Long wait between appetizers and entree was blamed on "short-handed kitchen on Sunday night" and busier than usual Sunday night due to the holiday on Monday. I have had better fries at Wendy's. Morimoto still rules!

Not what I expected from a restaurant of this supposed caliber. I'm a firm believer of 'you get what you pay for,' so I have no problem paying for the finer things in life. This experience of 'fine dining' was very sub-par. The food was not that great. The plating was also unimpressive. Another turn off was our waiter. When we ordered an expensive bottle of wine, he carded four visibly grown women. You get carded at the local gas station for beer, not for expensive wine. It was quite despicable. My friend recommended this place to me and she was very embarrassed!
