Intriguing Ingredients

With a cookie containing pretzels and potato chips, this was definitely something adventurous to try. Being a cookie lover, I have to say that the cookies in general are amazing, they melt in your mouth (after you've degreased them a bit with a napkin, not a bad thing always though, maybe it was just the summer day!)! My worldwide Top 10 cookie favorites (for now at least!) include the compost cookie, so check it out! http://sssourabh.wordpress.com/2010/07/24/bite-by-bite-seduction-by-cookies/ . The pies are okay, a little too sweet with sludgy texture, but creative enough by popping brownie or pretzels into them, with an intriguingly titled 'crack pie'. Thankfully they provide water to ease the sugar load. Although not THE best dessert place of NY (it was once in recent years), its definitely great to try some of their items multiple times.

I got the crack pie and the cereal milk soft serve with cornflakes. The crack pie, whilst admittedly very sweet, was to die for! However, the winner for the night was the cereal milk soft serve - and it's trademarked for a good reason - it was incredible! The addition of the cornflakes, which was made a bit saltier, was an amazing contrast and elevated the soft serve to a mind-blowing level. Without a doubt, the hype is true, and I'm definitely coming back!

David Chang could not have scrounged up more apathetic, unhelpful servers less willing to work if he'd gone to Paris himself and hired from a pool of striking labor party members. The only things his servers seem capable of are barking at you impatiently for your order before you've even had a chance to look over the display case or the flavors of the day, and taking your money for their overpriced food. While the food is satisfying, it leaves a bitter aftertaste since you're paying well more than it's worth to have to endure such indifferent service. On a recent visit, we asked for salt for the pork buns. (Shouldn't Chang have his seasoning down by now?) The bandana-ed hipster behind the counter merely shook her head slowly and said, "Noooo." There's no salt? (Another head shake.) Finally the poor steward overhearing us took it upon himself to run downstairs and fill up a sample cup with salt from the store room. Apparently David Chang seems to think the axiom "The customer is always right" doesn't apply to him. This customer isn't going back.

Milk Bar, Get Over Yourself!

I'm so tired of Milk Bar. Yes, I'll be the first to admit that I was completely consumed by the sheer novelty that Milk Bar virgins typically experience. I was brainwashed by the powers that be--David Chang and the Momofuku brand--to believe that their crazy pies, too-tall cakes, "compost" cookies, and rarely appealing soft serve flavors were futuristic; and therefore, delicious. This is no more the case. I'm a free woman! Fine, there were some highlights in my romance with Milk Bar. There was that Horchata soft serve they had during the holidays, the chocolate malt cake, and the Salty Pistachio soft serve. But what else? Read more at www.lestorydefood.com

I guess I am in the minority but I thought the cereal milk along with the ice cream was like taking a box of corn flakes letting it sit in a bowl of milk for hours and than drinking said milk. The crackpie was nothing more than ok . The sweetness factor of most of the desserts was of the charts. I am totally into new ideas and takes on old concepts but I truly dont see what all the hype is about and thats without adding in high prices. I mean 5 bucks for milk ?? There are way better places to get your sweet tooth on in the city than here.

I really like the banana curry loaf and chocolate chocolate chip cookies . The other cookies and pies are very very sweet (too much for me) Happy to get the pork buns when the you can't get into Momofuko! The volcano is a scary mess of onions and what seems like a pound of potatoes in dough A too big soggy messy knish.

And if soft serve doesn't do it for you the chocolate chip cake with a passion fruit custard layer will. Compost cookies, candy bar pie, apricot soft serve... all heaven. Buy a slice of everything and invite over a big group so you can taste it all. Your mouth will be happy for hours to follow.

I don't care what anyone says, but the cereal milk is just plain satisfying. The old fashioned doughnut soft serve is simply sublime. However, the pork bun was categorically underwhelming, not having enough fat content to give it that extra push over the edge. Overall, a consistently delicious niche product is served up for a fair price here.

Excessively sweet pies and milkshake

I think this bakery is drawing large crowds because of the hype surrounding David Chang, the celebrity chef who opened it. I found the desserts to be way too sweet (at least the things I tried), the "crackpie" (I can't remember how it's spelled) and some other very dense type of pie whose name escapes me. Both very, very, sugary. So sweet I couldn't really appreciate the other flavors. I also ordered a wild strawberry milk shake. Same deal. Much too sweet for my taste buds. An experience killer. Yechh was my reaction. But to each his/her own ... I think if Chang wasn't behind this establishment, it wouldn't necessarily be so successful. Also found it overpriced for an East Village establishment. Oh, and why is it so difficult to actually get through to someone on the phone to request street address information? Is it fashionable for a business to be so difficult to locate on the street? Is that, like, cool?

Delightful and refreshingly unpretentious

Stopped by on what could've been a horrible night to go to a dessert place-- Valentine's Day. Though it was crowded, the staff was encouraging and patient and answered all questions as though they were as delighted with all the sweet bounty before them as we were. And were we ever delighted! Between the three of us, a slice of cake, a soft serve sundae (with their unusual "cereal" flavors of the month), a milk shake, and a double chocolate cookie were sampled. Everything was rich and decadent without losing homeyness and being over the top. It's nice to have a great dessert that is simple and yet complex in flavor, without the need for foams and spun sugar and ridiculous, distracting garnishes. The cake especially (pistachio with lemon curd) was fantastic and only served to instantly commit my palate to another visit soon!
